BOX SCORE The Charlotte 49ers kept the momentum rolling on their inaugural season on Saturday afternoon. Just one week after earning their 52-7 inaugural win over Campbell, the 49ers topped the Chowan University Hawks 47-7 in McColl Richardson Stadium in front of a crowd of over 16,000 people.
Charlotte essentially shut down the Hawks' running game as Chowan gained a mere 65 rushing yards, but lost a total of 70 on the afternoon. In comparison, the 49ers collected 201 rushing yards in the victory to contribute to a total of 464 yards of offense over the course of the afternoon.
Cameron Stover was 20-31 in pass attempts with two interceptions in the loss. He connected with seven different Hawks' receivers for a total of 141 passing yards. Glenndale JC transfer
Dain McFarland made his first appearance in a Chowan jersey in the fourth quarter, and completed 4-5 passes for 63 yards. Matt Johnson carried the load for the 49ers and amassed 256 passing yards and threw five touch down passes before handing the reins over to Lee McNeill.

Robert Holland caught nine passes for 129 receiving yards, leading all receivers in the game. Antony Clanton ran for 21 yards in the loss. Defensively, the Hawks were led by
Willie Hickman who collected nine tackles (five solo, four assisted).
Jason Ampy and Dakorion Seamme each tallied eight tackles in the loss.
Johnson threw a ten yard pass to Austin Duke after a nine play, 75 yard drive to put Charlotte on the board 2:40 into the contest. Blake Brewer's point after attempt was good, giving the 49ers a 7-0 lead. The Hawks and 49ers exchanged possessions for the next eight minutes.
Antjuan Randall's catch of Brandon Strupp's 45 yard punt on the two yard line resulted in a safety for Charlotte as Terry Caldwell forced Randall back into the end zone with 4:52 remaining in the first quarter.
The 49ers took the score to 12-0 with 2:37 left in the first quarter after Brewer's 27 yard field goal. On the Hawks' next possession, Stover's interception led to Charlotte taking possession on the Chowan 40. Johnson promptly threw a 40 yard pass to Kalif Phillips to give the 49ers an 18-0 advantage. Brewer's point after attempt made the score 19-0.
Down, but not out, Stover and the Hawks answered back midway through the second quarter. A 35 yard touchdown pass to Randall put Chowan on the board, and
Alex Noboa's point after attempt brought the score to 19-7. Mikel Hunter's 96 yard kickoff return brought the momentum right back to Charlotte, and the point after extended their lead to 26-7. The 49ers added two more scores by the end of the third quarter to take a commanding 40-7 lead.
A nine play, 69 yard drive to open up the fourth quarter resulted in a touchdown and point after for Charlotte. The Hawks kept the 49ers off the board for the remainder of the contest, but suffered the 47-7 setback.
The Charlotte 49ers improve to 2-0 in their inagural season. They are scheduled to host North Carlolina Central next Saturday in a 12:00pm kick-off. The Hawks fall to 0-1 on the short season and return to Murfreesboro to host Alderson-Broaddus on September 14th. Kick-off is slated for 12:05 pm.
