Dr. Christopher Coleman

Football

1995 - 1998

Dr. Christopher N. Coleman was a standout linebacker whose remarkable career at Chowan established him as one of the most accomplished defensive players in program history.

A native of Crewe, Virginia, Coleman played linebacker for the Hawks from 1995 through 1998, leaving an extraordinary mark on the program and the NCAA Division III record books. He recorded 329 career tackles, including 194 assisted tackles, and finished with 57 tackles for loss, establishing NCAA Division III career records in all three categories.

Coleman's dominance was particularly evident during his sophomore season in 1997, when he recorded a school-record 24 tackles for loss and earned All-American recognition from Football Gazette. He followed that performance with another outstanding season in 1998, recording 22 tackles for loss and 51 unassisted tackles. His back-to-back seasons of 24 and 22 tackles for loss remain among the defining defensive performances in Chowan football history.

Coleman also made his mark on special teams. During his freshman season in 1996, he blocked an opponent's point-after-touchdown attempt and returned it for a two-point defensive conversion, demonstrating the game-changing ability that characterized his playing career.  In his senior season, he earned All-South Region honors, All-ACFC honors, and was named NCAA D3 Football Gazette's National Defensive Player of the Week two times. He was named to the Chowan University All Division III Team in 2020.

His accomplishments on the field are only part of his story. Coleman went on to build a distinguished career in education, earning his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Liberty University in 2021. He previously served as the  Deputy Superintendent of Operations for Isle of Wight County Schools in Virginia before being appointed the Superintendent of Isle of Wight County Schools in July of this year. During his career with Isle of Wight County Schools, he has managed the construction and implementation of seven state-of-the-art Career and Technical Education classrooms, creating expanded opportunities for students to develop workforce-ready skills. He oversaw the construction of the new Hardy Elementary School and led several major facility improvement projects, including the replacement of tracks, tennis courts, and football fields at both Smithfield and Windsor High Schools. He also coordinated the renovation of a portion of the former Hardy Elementary School into the division's School Administrative Offices, providing a modern, collaborative workspace for central office staff.

Beyond education, Coleman has served in the United States Army Reserve, achieving the rank of Major and earning numerous military decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal. He retired with 22 years of service. His military service reflects the leadership, discipline, and commitment to service that continue to guide his work in public education.

From record-setting performances on the football field to leadership in education and service to his country, Christopher Coleman exemplifies excellence, dedication, and a commitment to making a lasting impact.

Warren Chauncey

Patron

Warren Chauncey's relationship with Chowan began nearly 50 years ago while traveling the rural roads between Tidewater, Virginia and Northeast North Carolina. At the time, neither party could have anticipated the dear relationship that these rural roads would eventually entwine. By mere circumstance, chance encounters have turned into lifelong, cherished  relationships with families and friends deeply rooted and dedicated to Chowan University and all that she encapsulates.

In the 1970s, Warren Chauncey was working in medical sales in Ahoskie when he was encouraged to visit Chowan and attend some of the university's athletic events. It was there that Warren began forming friendships with several members of the Chowan community whose names would become synonymous with the institution, including Burke, Garrison, and, most notably, Surface.

Warren developed a particularly close friendship with Dan Surface, a relationship that grew into a lifelong bond with Dan and Sallie's children, Eric, Julianne, and Brian.

Mr. Chauncey's contributions to Chowan began to take shape in the 1980's when he helped establish tennis and racquetball tournaments that attracted competitors from across Virginia and North Carolina. Participants would stay in Parker Hall during the summer, enjoying the campus, its athletic facilities, and the sports they loved.

Over more than five decades of involvement, Warren has played an instrumental role in projects spanning nearly every aspect of campus life. His generosity and commitment have helped establish academic and athletic scholarships, support athletic facility improvements, and advance campus development projects that remain essential to Chowan's operations today.

Although a proud graduate of the University of Virginia, Warren Chauncey has spent more than 50 years demonstrating that the bonds formed through a university extend far beyond graduation. Through his generosity, friendship, and unwavering commitment, he has earned a special place in the Chowan family. Warren Chauncey may be a Cavalier by education, but he will forever be a Chowan man.
