Box Score CHARLOTTE, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team defeated the Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams in thrilling fashion on Sunday afternoon. The final match of the CIAA Cross Divisional Round-Up featured the only two undefeated teams in the league. The Hawks came out on top in a five set match to remain at the top of the CIAA standings with a 9-0 record in league play.
Suraya Chase led all players in the contest with 18 kills in the match.
Nikira Fults added nine kills in the win, and
Kelsey Schlake collected 15 assists.
Cindy Ehrich notched eight digs for the Hawks.
Katelin Wensley led the Lady Rams with nine kills in the loss. Kayla Brass tallied 18 assists and Katelyn Sigala grabbed 15 digs.
With a narrow 9-7 lead early in the first set, the Hawks used five unanswered points to pull away 14-7. The Lady Rams fought back to move within four points of Chowan, but a 5-0 run gave the Hawks a comfortable 23-13 advantage in the first set. A kill from
Brianna Smith and a Lady Ram attack error confirmed the 25-15 victory in set one for the Hawks.
Winston-Salem State took advantage of numerous Hawk miscues in the second set to steal a 25-19 win. The Hawks were unable to recover in the third set, and the Lady Rams used the momentum to quickly take the 25-12 win.
Down but not out, Chowan answered back in the fourth set. With the score knotted 6-6, four straight points for the Hawks led to a 10-6 lead. The Hawks jumped out to a 19-10 lead by taking advantage of Lady Ram miscues and kills from Chase and
Allison Smith. Winston-Salem State was unable to recover from the deficit, and Chowan grabbed the 25-15 win to force a deciding fifth set.
The Hawk maintained an early 7-4 lead, but the Lady Rams grabbed the momentum using a 7-0 run to gain a 13-7 advantage. Trailing 13-9, Chowan took matters into their own hands and scored six straight points capped by a kill from Chase to grab the 15-13 set win and 3-2 match win.
Chowan moves to 9-1 overall and 9-0 in CIAA play. Winston-Salem State falls to 8-6 overall and 7-1 in league action. The Hawks return to Murfreesboro and the Helms Center on October 3
rd to host Virginia State University. The CIAA Northern Division contest will be Chowan's annual Dig Pink match. Match time is slated for 6:00pm. For more information, visit
