Box Score CHARLOTTE, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team grabbed two wins on Saturday at the CIAA Cross Divisional Round-Up. The Hawks snagged a 3-0 win over Livingstone College before notching a 3-0 victory against the host Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith.
In the first match,
Allison Smith led all players in the contest with eight kills.
Kelsey Schlake tallied 17 assists in the victory. The Lady Blue Bears took an early 4-3 lead in the first set, but Chowan quickly answered back to pull ahead 9-6. With the set tied 9-9, the Hawks used a 7-0 run to gain a 16-9 advantage. Livingstone fought back to stay on Chowan's heels, but a kill by Smith confirmed the 25-21 victory for the Hawks.
Chowan continued to score in bunches in the second set en route to the 25-13 victory. Trailing 8-7, a kill by
Nikira Fults brought the point and the serve over to Chowan. A Lady Blue Bear attack error and three straight service aces from
Jordan Miller gave the Hawks a 12-8 advantage. With the score 12-10, Chowan fought to score seven unanswered points to move ahead 19-10 before closing out the 25-13 win in set two.
Livingstone jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the third set before Chowan knotted the score as a result of a Lady Blue bear service error, a kill by smith, and Miller's service ace. Down 7-6, Chowan rallied back to take a 15-9 lead before using a 6-0 run to grab a 21-9 advantage. A kill from Briana Smith at the end of the third set confirmed the 25-12 set win, and 3-0 match victory.
Smith collected eight more kills in the second match followed by Miller's seven kills to lead the Hawks to victory over the Lady Golden Bills. Schlake notched 28 assists in the win. Chowan continued to control the momentum in the nightcap as the quickly grabbed a 25-16 win over Johnson C. Smith in the first set by capitalizing on Lady Golden Bulls and kills by various Hawk players.
The Lady Golden Bulls made things interesting late in the second set by taking advantage of three consecutive attack errors by the Hawks to pull within three. With a narrow 23-20 lead, Chowan regained control with a kill by Miller and one from
Suraya Chase to clinch the 25-21 win in the second set.
The Hawks made quick work of the Lady Golden Bulls in the third set. After jumping to a 13-4 lead, Chowan continued to build off kills and Johnson C. Smith's miscues to close out the set with a 25-18 win.
Chowan will take on the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State on Sunday to close out the weekend at the CIAA Round-Up. After Saturday's wins, the Hawks move to 8-1 overall and 8-0 in league action.
