Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team suffered their first loss of the season on Wednesday evening in a 3-0 loss to the visiting Trojans of Mount Olive College. The defeat snapped a six match win streak for the Hawks, while Mount Olive snagged their fourth straight win with the victory.
Suraya Chase led the effort for Chowan with 11 kills in the loss.
Kelsey Schlake tallied 20 assists while
Allison Smith shelled out eight digs. For Mount Olive, Carly White led the way with 10 kills and Nicole Karas added 32 assists. Nicole Sparkes grabbed 11 digs in the contest.
Chowan earned a hard fought 8-5 lead in the first set, but the Trojans quickly responded with five straight points to take a 10-8 lead. With the score knotted 10-10, Mount Olive used two attack errors and a kill to pull ahead 13-10. A service error gave the point and the serve back to the Hawks, but the Trojans rattled off six unanswered points resulting in a 19-11 advantage. Chowan fought back but fell to the Trojans 25-16 in set one.
Mount Olive continued to maintain the momentum in the second set as they quickly pulled ahead 13-5. Chowan pulled within five points of the Trojans (15-10), but five unanswered points in favor of Mount Olive extended the Trojans' lead to 20-10. A kill by Alysha Tyms-Burnett secured the 25-14 win for the Trojans in the second set.
The third set saw Mount Olive jump ahead 12-4 to set the tone for the remainder of the match. Chowan clawed their way back to overcome the deficit, and a kill by
Brianna Smith brought the Hawks within three points (20-17). A kill from Schlake late in the match inched Hawks to move within a mere point (23-22), but Trojan kill and a Chowan attack error resulted in Mount Olive taking the 25-23 win in set three.
Mount Olive improves to 4-7 with the win while Chowan moves to 6-1 on the season.
The Hawks hit the road this weekend to take on Livingstone, Johnson C. Smith and Winston-Salem State in the CIAA Round-up hosted by the Lady Golden Bulls. Chowan will return to their home court on October 3rd to host Virginia State in their annual Dig Pink Match slated for 6:00pm.
