Hawks Top Lady Vikings in CIAA Northern Division Battle

Nikira Fults had 18 kills in Thursday's match.
Box Score ELIZABETH CITY STATE, NC- The Chowan University Hawks came out on top in a CIAA battle against Northern divisional foe Elizabeth City State University on Thursday evening.  The Hawks dropped the first set 25-23 before trumping the Lady Vikings 25-15, 25-10, 25-13. 
 
Nikira Fults led all players in the match with 18 kills.  Suraya Chase chipped in 13 kills in the victory and Jordan Miller added 11 kills in the effort.  Kelsey Schlake tallied 44 assists while Cindy Ehrich held down the back row with 18 digs.  The Lady Vikings were led by Rosetta Becerra who collected nine kills. 
 
The Hawks trailed 5-3 early in set one before a kill from Chase brought the serve and the momentum back to Chowan.  Nine straight points for the Hawks off serves from Schlake gave Chowan a 12-5 lead.  A Hawk attack error led to six points for the Lady Vikings, which brought Elizabeth City State one point from tying the set.  Both teams fought to maintain control of the set until the Lady Vikings pulled away 21-19.  Chowan battled back, taking advantage of an Elizabeth City State attack error and kill by Chase to knot the score 21-21.  The Lady Vikings grabbed the lead off a Hawks attack error and maintained the lead before taking the first set 25-23. 
 
Chowan quickly recovered in the second set.  The Hawks scored in bunches early on to grab a 16-4 advantage.  The Lady Vikings were unable to recover from the deficit and trailed by double digit points throughout the majority of the set.  A kill by Miller secured the 25-15 set win for the Hawks and evened the match score 1-1. 
 
The Hawks continued to maintain control in the third set.  Despite trailing 3-2 early in the set, Chowan tied the score after an Elizabeth City State attack error and followed suit by scoring the next five points thereafter tom make the score 8-3.  The Hawks continued to take charge in the set and did not allow the Lady Vikings to score consecutive points until they scored their 9th and 10th points at the end of the set.  Chowan closed out set three with a 25-10 win. 
 
In set four, the Hawks and Lady Vikings battled for the upper hand.  Chowan maintained a narrow lead for the majority of the set, but rattled off eight straight points thanks to service aces and kills from Fults to gain a 23-12 advantage.  Kills from Miller and Fults confirmed the 25-13 victory and the first CIAA Northern Division win of the season. 
 
The Hawks improve to 4-0 on the young season, and are 4-0 in CIAA competition.  They return to the Helms Center on Sunday to host Bowie State University at 1:00pm and Lincoln University (PA) on Monday at 6:00pm.  Both contests are CIAA Northern Division matches. 
 
Elizabeth City State slides to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in league play.
