Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University Hawks closed out the weekend at the CIAA Round-Up with two victories on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks blanked Shaw 3-0 in the first match before snagging a 3-0 win over defending CIAA Champions Fayetteville State University.
The Hawks quickly captured a 3-0 win over Shaw University for their second CIAA win in as many days.
Suraya Chase led all players in the contest with 11 kills in the victory.
Brianna Smith chipped in eight kills in the contest while
Kelsey Schlake tallied 19 assists.
Chowan started off the first set trailing 4-1 until
Cindy Ehrich swung the momentum back towards the Hawks as she served for nine straight points. Down 10-4, the Lady Bears battled to fight back, but trailed by at least five points for the remainder of the set.
After capturing the set 25-9, the Hawks continued to control the tempo of the contest by taking advantage of Lady Bear errors and using a spread attack offensive attack. Ehrich solidified Chowan's presence on the court early in the second set as she served for seven straight points to put the Hawks ahead 10-3. With the score 14-6 in favor of Chowan, the Hawks rattled off six consecutive points to take a 20-6 lead before earning the 25-8 victory in set two.
Although Shaw took an early 3-0 lead in the third and final set, Chowan put together a six point rally, five of which were off serves from
Jordan Miller to regain control. Trailing 9-5, Shaw took advantage of a service error, a kill, and two service aces to pull within a mere point of the Hawks. Chowan regrouped after a kill from Chase to take the driver's seat and capture the final set 25-16.
The second match of the afternoon featured the defending CIAA Champions and runner-up from the 2012 CIAA Championship. This time, it was the Hawks that came out on stop as they stunned the Lady Broncos 3-0. Chase led the way for Chowan again in the match with 16 kills on the afternoon.
Nikira Fults chipped in nine kills and Schlake collected 27 assists. Joylene Thompson collected seven kills for the Lady Broncos in the loss.
After earning an early 2-1 lead in the first set, Chowan maintained the lead for the entire first set. Fayetteville State stayed close on Chowan's heels until a four point rally gave the Hawks a double digit lead (23-11) late in the first set. A kill by Chase secured the 25-13 victory in the first set.
The second set saw a shift in momentum as the Lady Broncos grabbed a quick 10-4 lead. A kill by Schlake brought the serve back to the Hawks which led to a six point rally behind three service aces by
Brianna Smith to give Chowan an 11-10 lead. Both teams traded points until late in the set. With the score tied 17-17, Fults' kill brought the momentum back to Chowan, and the Hawks closed out the set with a 25-23 victory.
Both teams fought to gain control through the majority of the third set. With the score tied 16-16, Fayetteville used a kill and a service ace to gain an 18-16 advantage. A kill from
Allison Smith brought the Hawks within one and returned the serve to Chowan. The Hawks quickly rallied to score eight consecutive points to close out the match with a 25-18 win.
Chowan moves to 3-0 overall and 3-0 in CIAA play. They travel to Elizabeth City State on September 19
th to take on the Lady Vikings in their first match of Northern Division play. Match time is slated for 6:00pm.
