Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University Softball team dropped Friday afternoon's non-conference doubleheader against Pace University 3-0 and 4-3. Pace University improves to 2-0 while Chowan falls to 3-11 on the season.
Alora Lincoln and
Courtney Groce took losses on the mound pitching complete games respectively.
In game one, Pace University held Chowan to three hits in the contest. Pace's Chelsea Shea threw the complete game shut-out for her first win of the season.
The Hawks started off the first inning with a rally featuring a bunt single to third base by
Leigh Ward followed up by a
Tori Cragan's hit-by-pitch and
Kelly Hardison drawing a walk. Key strikeouts by Shea kept the Hawks off the board with bases loaded.
Chelsea Shea would only allow two Hawk batters to reach base from the first inning on.
Amber Matthews and
Tori Cragan would reach base, with a single and a double in the fourth and sixth innings respectively.
Pace University would get on the board first in the top of the fourth inning thanks to doubles by Katie Lange and Lana Buchbinder gave the Setters an early 2-0 lead.
The Setters would score again in the top of the fifth inning scoring on three hits in the inning. Katie Lange would push the lead to 3-0 on a RBI single up the middle.
In the nightcap, Pace University would jump out in front in the top of the second scoring two in the inning. Erin Wood would reach on a base hit through the right side followed up by a Katie Lange double in the left center gap. Samantha Garcia would drive Wood and Lange in with a single down the left field line.
Chowan would cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second inning.
Amber Matthews would single to second base to start the Hawk attack. A walk and a fielder's choice in the inning would push Matthews to third.
Hannah Joyce would single up the middle to bring in Matthews for the Hawks first run of the game.
Pace would push their lead to 3-1 in the top half of the fourth inning thanks to another double by Lange. Kim Duffy would ground out to shortstop scoring Lange on the throw.
Chowan would answer back in the bottom half of the inning cutting the lead to 3-2. Matthews' lead-off walk and sacrifice bunt by
Lauren Astengo would put the Hawks in scoring position.
Courtney Baker's double to right field would allow
Kayla Brady, pinch running for Matthews, to score from second base.
Pace would score again in the top of the fifth off a single and stolen base by Jeane Drury. Rachael McMahon would score Drury from second with a double to left field pushing the score to 4-2.
Chowan would fight back in the fifth inning.
Leigh Ward would draw a walk and pushed to second with a sacrifice bunt by
Shelby Pendleton.
Kelly Hardison would single to left field scoring Ward making the score 4-3 where it would stand.
Chowan had a chance to at least tie or take the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pendleton and Cragan drew walks in the inning but Pace's pitching change with two outs halted the Hawk attack.
Amber Matthews would finish the series going 2-4 at the plate scoring a run and drawing a walk.
Leigh Ward would finish 2-6 from the plate.
Pace's Katie Lange would finish the day 5-6 at the plate scoring three runs and one RBI. Caitlin McCann would earn the save for the Setters in the night cap.
Chowan takes on Shippensburg University on Sunday March 3
rd in a non-conference double-header.
