Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO - The Chowan University softball team improved to 3-9 on the year after splitting a twinbill against Peach Belt Conference member UNC-Pembroke. Chowan won the first game of the doubleheader 3-2 and narrowly dropped the second game 2-1. Chowan's
Tori Cragan drove in two runs in the 3-2 win including a game-winning double in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Leigh Ward got Chowan on the board first in the bottom of the first inning after reaching base on a bunt single. Ward advanced to third base on a stolen base and passed ball and with two outs, Cragan singled up the middle to score Ward from third.
UNC-Pembroke answered in the top of the third inning after two doubles. Cragan drove in her second run of the game when
Hannah Joyce scored from second base on a single through the left side. In the Braves final at-bat of the game, Sequoia Barrett drove in Megan Hilliard on a double to right center field to tie the game at 2-2.
Ward once again reached on a bunt single in the bottom of the seventh. Joyce moved her to second base with a sacrifice bunt, which brought Cragan to the plate with two outs. Cragan drove the ball down the right field line to score Ward and get the 3-2 win.
Ward and Cragan accounted for five of the team's six hits in the win. Ward ended the day 2-4 with two runs scored and Cragan finished up 3-4 with all three runs driven in.
Alora Lincoln picked up the win on the mound after giving up two runs on six hits. She struck out five in the win.
UNC-Pembroke held the Hawks to just two hits in the nightcap 2-1 loss.
Kelly Hardison and
Courtney Baker each garnered hits in the game.The Braves picked up two runs in their first at-bat of the game and let their pitching go to work to hold Chowan off 2-1.
Courtney Groce picked up the loss on the mound for Chowan after tossing the complete game. She gave up two runs on five hits and struck out four in the contest.
Chowan will take off until Friday when they play host to Pace University at 12:00pm.
