Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University men's basketball team slipped to 2-3 on the season after dropping a 72-67 decision to the visiting Falcons of St. Augustine's University on Wednesday evening in nonconference play. The Falcons improve to 5-3 with the win and earned their third straight victory after the contest.
Ashante Ross led the effort with 17 points for the Hawks.
Warren Powers added 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds (four offensive, three defensive) while
Kortez Smith chipped in 15 points in the loss.
Amere May of St. Augustine's led all players in the contest with 21 points. Joel Kindred and Jonathon Crawley each contributed 12 points in the win and Daniel Clark added 11 points. Crawley had 12 rebounds in the contest (five offensive, seven defensive) and earned a double-double.
The Falcons shot 46% from the floor in the win in comparison to 32% by the Hawks.
St. Augustine's jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after baskets from Clark, Crawley, and May. The Hawks battled to keep the Falcons at-bay until
Kyree Bethel's three pointer at the 14:09 mark brought the Hawks within one point (11-10). Both teams traded baskets as the clock wound down in the first half but May's trey with 1:10 left to play put the Falcons ahead 40-33 and gave St. Augustine's their largest lead of the half. Chowan responded with a 6-0 run capped by
Kortez Smith's lay-up at the buzzer and trailed 40-39 at halftime.
The Hawks trailed 44-43 two minutes into the second half but a three pointer by Smith returned the momentum to Chowan, giving them their first lead of the game (46-44) at the 17:21 mark. The Falcons snatched the lead back after two made free throws by May. St. Augustine's maintained the lead for the remainder of the contest and secured the victory after Raheem Joliffe netted two free throws with 18 seconds on the clock to put the Falcon ahead by three points (70-67). Tayron Gibson's free throws after a Chowan technical foul secured the 72-67 victory for the Falcons.
Chowan will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Davis & Elkins. Tip-off is slated for 4:00pm.
