Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team's season came to an end on Saturday morning in a 3-0 loss to Fayetteville State University. The Hawks end their season with an 18-9 overall record after the semi final loss while the Lady Broncos advance to the CIAA Championship to defend their title with an 18-7 record. Chowan topped Fayetteville State 3-0 back on September 15
th, but it was the Lady Broncos that had the last word on Saturday.
Brianna Smith notched a team-high seven kills in the match while
Nikira Fults added six kills of her own.
Allison Smith tallied eight assists in the loss.
Brianna Smith and
Cindy Ehrich each hauled in nine digs.
Samira Luis led all players in the match with 14 kills in the victory for Fayetteville State. Paige Horne had 14 assists while JaMisha Jordan collected a match-high 17 digs.
The Lady Broncos jumped out to a 3-2 lead early in the first set and never looked back from that point forward. Fayetteville State led by as many as eight points (17-9) midway through the first set before securing the 25-19 win with a kill from Luis.
Fayetteville State took advantage of several Hawk errors early in the second set to maintain the momentum. Chowan fought back to knot the score 8-8 after a kill from
Brianna Smith. The Lady Broncos used kills from Luis and Shavon Shaw as well as Hawk miscues to gain a 14-9 advantage before clinching the 25-15 victory in set two.
The Hawks and Lady Broncos battled for control in the third set. Chowan used consecutive Fayetteville State errors to gain a narrow 9-8 lead but kills from Joylene Thompson and Luis swung the momentum back to the Lady Broncos.
Fayetteville State continued to extend their lead late in the third set, and scored five out of the seven points off Hawk errors to confirm the 25-15 set victory. The Lady Broncos' match win holds Chowan out of the CIAA Championship match for the first time since 2009.
The Lady Broncos will take on Winston-Salem State in the CIAA Championship at 4:00pm.
