Trojans Blank Hawks on Senior Day

DaSean Martin had 14 carries on Saturday.
Box Score MURFREESBOO, NC- The Chowan University football team was held scoreless on Saturday afternoon as the Virginia State University Trojans claimed the CIAA Northern Division title in a 28-0 victory over the Hawks.  Saturday's game marked the first time Chowan has been shut out since 2008 (St. Paul's College 13-0). 
 
Robert Holland led all receivers in the game with 14 catches for 123 yards.  He leads the Hawks with 1040 receiving yards on the year and leads the league averaging 115.6 yards per game.  Ryan Simpson was 26-44 pass completions with 276 passing yards on the afternoon.  DaSean Martin tallied 14 carries for 66 yards in the loss.  Jared Turner led the Hawks with seven tackles (five solo, two assisted).  The Hawks tallied 363 offensive yards in comparison to 346 by the Trojans, but came up short on the scoreboard. 
 
For Virginia State, Jordan Anderson had 23 carries for 160 yards in the win.  He scored three touchdowns in the victory and reached the 1000 career rushing mark. 
 
The Hawks honored 18 senior football players: Jason Ampy, TJ Batchelor, Aeon Blake, Blake Bolt, Na'Jee Curry, DaKorion DeSamme, Robert Holland, Will Jones, Matt Lucas, Chris Morris, Devahn Murphy, Calvin Preston, Vernell Price, JJ Rodriguez, JamaRR Royster, Ryan Simpson, Austin Tallant, and Gatlin Williams along with CU Sapphire Tristin Jenkins prior to kick-off.  Five Jim Garrison Hall of Fame Inductees (Clyde Alligood (posthumously), Melvin Crosby, George Drawhorn, Steve Flack (posthumously) and John McNeil) were recognized at halftime as well. 
 
After a scoreless first quarter, the Trojans used a nine play, 70 yard drive to get on the board.  Anderon capped the drive with a 15 yard touchdown run and Shawn Hunt's point after attempt gave Virginia State a 7-0 lead. 
 
The Trojans closed out the half with a narrow 7-0 lead, but came alive to score three times in the third quarter.  On their first possession in the half, Virginia State strung together a 12 play, 77 yard drive to move ahead 14-0 after Anderson's one yard touchdown run and Hunt's point after attempt. 
 
With the Hawks pinned against their own two-yard line, Devonte Piggot picked off Simpson's pass and returned it to the end zone.  Hunt's point after attempt propelled the Trojans to a 21-0 advantage. 
 
With 52 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Anderson took matters into his own hands once more.  He started the drive with a three yard run and scored on the next play with a 73 yard touchdown run.  Hunt's point after attempt solidified the 28-0 victory for the Trojans. 
 
Although the Hawks held Virginia State scoreless in the fourth quarter, they were unable to escape the shutout loss. 
 
Chowan falls to 3-6 overall on the season and 2-4 in CIAA competition.  The Hawks look to recover next week in their season finale.  They travel to Lincoln (PA) on November 9th to take on the Lions in a 1:00pm contest. 
 
Virginia State improves to 8-1 overall and remains perfect in league play with a 6-0 record.
