Hawks Secure Spot in CIAA Semi Finals

The Hawks went 2-1 on Saturday and advance to the CIAA Tournament semi finals next weekend.
Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC- The Chowan University volleyball secured a spot in the CIAA Tournament next weekend after winning two of three matches on Saturday afternoon.  The Hawks earned a 3-1 match victory over St. Augustine's in the first match of the day before falling to Winston-Salem State in four sets.  Chowan recovered to defeat the Lady Falcons in the last match to confirm a semi final appearance next Saturday. 
 
The Hawks were led by Brianna Smith, Melanie Chaussee and Suraya Chase who each collected double digit kills in the opening match.  Allison Smith tallied 34 assists for the Blue and White while Cindy Ehrich hauled in 18 digs.  The Hawks earned a 25-20 win in the first set, but fell to the Lady Falcons 26-24.  Chowan defeated St. Augustine's 25-16 before securing the match win with a 25-17 victory in set four. 
 
Chowan failed to hang onto the momentum in the second match and fell to Winston-Salem State 3-1.  The Lady Rams took set one 25-21 before the Hawks battled tor a 25-18 win in set two.  Winston-Salem State closed out the match with the win after earning 25-21 and 25-13 victories in set three and four respectively.  Brianna Smith had a team-high 13 kills in the loss while Kelsey Schlake had 32 assists. 
 
The Hawks bounced back from the loss to defeat the St. Augustine's Lady Falcons 3-1 to close out the evening.  Chowan jumped out to an early lead after grabbing wins in the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-22.  The Lady Falcons slipped in a 25-17 victory in set three before Chowan closed out the set with a 25-18 victory.  Brianna Smith had a team-high 10 kills in the victory.  Allison Smith notched 30 assists while Cindy Ehrich collected 19 digs in the win. 
 
Chowan will return to Winston-Salem State next weekend to compete in CIAA Tournament semi final action.  The Hawks stand 18-8 on the season.
