Hawks Cage Lady Panthers

Box Score RICHMOND, VA- The Chowan University volleyball team picked up a critical CIAA Northern Division win against the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University on Friday evening.  The Hawks improve to 15-6 overall after the 3-0 victory and move to 14-1 in the league.  The Lady Panthers slip to 7-12 overall and 7-8 in CIAA action after Friday's loss. 
 
Suraya Chase led all scorers in the contest with 15 kills in the match, followed by Nikira Fults with 10 kills.  Kelsey Schlake collected 19 assists while Allison Smith notched 16 assists of her own.  Cindy Ehrich hauled in 24 digs for the Hawks.  Kristin Madison led the effort for the Lady Panthers with a team-high 11 kills.  Esha Atkins tallied 25 assists while Ellie Parsons and Allorie Sanders grabbed 17 and 13 digs respectively. 
 
The Hawks took advantage of several Virginia Union attack errors to jump to an early 7-1 lead in the first set.  Chowan maintained control for the remainder of the set thanks to miscues by the Lady Panthers and a spread offensive attack.  With a 23-19 advantage, two Lady Panther attack errors allowed the Hawks to pick up the 25-19 victory in set one. 
 
Chowan pulled ahead 6-1 in set two and maintained a comfortable lead until midway through the set when the Lady Panthers used a 4-0 run to pull within one point (16-15).  Virginia Union battled to tie the set 18-18 and eventually pulled ahead 21-19.  The Hawks answered back with a 6-1 run to snake past the Lady Panthers 25-22 in set two. 
 
The Hawks continued to build the momentum in set three.  After earning the first three points in the set, Chowan remained in the drivers' seat and closed out the match with a 25-16 victory in the deciding set. 
 
Chowan returns to Murfreesboro and the Helms Center on Sunday November 3rd.  The Hawks are scheduled to take on Claflin in a 1:00pm match-up.  Chowan will then hit the road on Monday for their final match of the regular season against Virginia State University.  First serve is slated for 6:00pm.
