Hawks Defend Home Court with Straight Set Sweep of Virginia Union

Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team earned a critical CIAA Northern Division win over the visiting Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University on Thursday evening.  The 3-0 victory moves the Hawks to 14-5 overall and 13-1 in the league.  The Lady Panthers fall to 6-10 overall and 6-7 against CIAA competition after the loss. 
 
Suraya Chase led the effort for the Hawks with eight kills in the contest.  Allison Smith tallied 30 assists while collecting 10 digs for a double-double effort.  Cindy Ehrich led all players in the match with 17 digs.  For Virginia Union, Kristin Madison tallied a team-high eight kills while Esha Atkins notched 13 assists. 
 
With the score knotted 5-5 in the first set, a kill by Suraya Chase sparked a 4-0 run to give Chowan a 9-5 lead.  Both teams battled back and forth from that point forward until the score was knotted once more at 13-13 midway through the set.  A kill by Brianna Smith brought the momentum and the score back to the Hawks before they closed out the set with the 25-22 win. 
 
Chowan jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the second set thanks to three Lady Panthers' errors and a kill from Nikira Fults.  The Hawks maintained the lead through the remainder of the set and quickly earned the 25-17 win.  Virginia Union used two Chowan attack errors to gain an early 2-0 advantage in the third set.  The Hawks quickly answered back to take a 3-2 lead after a kill by Allison Smith and two Lady Panther errors. 
 
Chowan held on to the momentum and extended their lead to 11-5 after 5-0 run.  The Lady Panthers pulled within two points of the Hawks midway through the set (15-13), but a kill from Lauren East followed by three Virginia Union errors put Chowan ahead 19-13.  A service error by Atkins sealed the 25-16 win for Chowan in the third set. 
 
The Hawks will hit the road for the next two matches.  They take on Claflin University on October 29th and Virginia Union on November 1st.  Chowan will return to the Helms Center on November 3rd to host Claflin in a nonconference match-up.  First serve is slated for 1:00pm.
