CU Women Come from Behind to Beat Lincoln, 59-57

Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- BOX SCORE The Chowan University women's basketball team picked up their second win in a row after beating the Lincoln University (PA) Lady Lions on Wednesday 59-57. The Hawks pulled out the come from behind win after trailing by five points with less than two minutes to play in the game. Chowan improves to 4-14 on the season and 4-6 in CIAA play while Lincoln (PA)  falls to 7-12 and 3-6 in the CIAA. 

Kaela Nelson got the Hawks on the board to open the game after hitting a lay-up.  CU's Janelle Murphy followed up on the team's next possession with a three-pointer to extend the lead to 5-2.  The Hawks spread their lead to seven at 16-9 halfway through the first period after Murphy drilled her second three pointer of the half. Chowan led most of the first half but the Lady Lions battled and ended the first half on a 10-4 run capped off with Courtney Smith draining a three ball to knot the game 27-27.   Smith finished the night with nine points for the Lady Lions.

Murphy opened the second half much like she finished the first. She nailed her third three-pointer of the game to open up the second half to give the Hawks the lead the early 30-27 second half lead.  The two teams were locked in a battle for most of the second half which included ties at five different points.

Tied at 45-45 with 7:14 remaining in the game, the Lady Lions went on an 11-2 run fueled by Courtney Lucas. Lucas sparked the comeback after hitting five of her nine total points on the run. That run spread the Lady Lions lead to nine with just over 3:00 to play in the game.

Free throws in the final two minutes were crucial for the Hawks and helped to propel them to the two point win. The final two minutes of play, the Hawks were able to erase a five point deficit after hitting 6 of 10 from the charity stripe. 

The Hawks out rebounded the Lady Lions 56-41 with 20 of those on the offensive glass. CU's Karina Monroe grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds to go along with five points.   Nelson finished the night with seven boards. Lynch finished the night with 19 points to lead all scorers for the second straight home game. Murphy followed with 14 points of her own. The two guards combined to hit 6 of 10 from beyond the three point arch. Nine different Hawks scored points in the win.

For Lincoln (PA), Tahlar McIntosh led the Lady Lions with 11 points.  Zephrah Pam tallied nine boards to lead the Lady Lions on the glass.

Chowan will travel to Richmond, VA to take on the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union on Saturday, February 2nd.  They will return to the Helms Center on Tuesday, February 5th to host Virginia University-Lynchburg in a non-conference match up. Tipoff is set for 5:30pm in the Helms Center
