Box Score MURFREESBORO - Angelo Sharpless dropped 27 points and grabbed 15 boards to help propel the Elizabeth City State University Vikings past Chowan University 76-69 in CIAA North Division play on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks opened the game on fire, hitting 62% from the floor (16-26). After a back and forth first half, Chowan took a 40-37 lead into halftime after Blackmon hit four straight free throws in the final two minutes of the period. The Hawks spread their lead to six points after Blackmon hit a jumper to open the second half and
Chris Williams made good on 1-2 from the foul line.
The Vikings tied the game at 46 at the 15:18 mark of the second period after Sharpless hit 2-2 from the foul line. After a turnover by the Hawks on the next possession, the Vikings took a 49-46 lead after Glenn Patterson nailed a three pointer. The Vikings would not lose that lead for the remainder of the second half. Chowan hung around and even cut the lead to three points with seven minutes to play but key defense and solid foul shooting lifted them to a victory over Chowan.
Chowan was led by Blackmon who scored 20 points and grabbed six boards. McDuffie came off the bench to score 20 and get four rebounds.
Sharpless led all scorers with 27 points and 15 rebounds. Deon Rice had 22 points in the win for ECSU. Patterson contributed 15 oints and hit 3-5 from beyond the three point arch.
The Hawks will travel to Virginia State University on Wednesday, January 23rd in their next match. They return to the Helms Center on Saturday, January 26th to host Bowie State University at 4:00pm.
