Hawks Claim CIAA North Division Title with Sweep of Bowie State

Amber Matthews went 2-2 with a triple and a double in Sunday's second game win
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO - Fifth year Head Coach Mandi Balduf will have to find space for another CIAA North Division Softball Title. Balduf and her band of Hawks claimed the 2012 CIAA North Division Title on Sunday after sweeping Bowie State University in the last regular season game of the year. The mounting tension that built up heading into today's doubleheader broke after the Hawks posted seven runs in the second inning of the first game. From there, the Hawks rolled to a 12-4 first game win and then posted a 7-1 second game win. Bowie State wraps up the season at 16-14 overall and 12-4 in the CIAA while the Hawks end the regular season 23-24 overall and and 14-2 in the league. The Hawks went unbeaten in North Division play at 10-0. Chowan captured their third CIAA North Division Title today. 

Bowie State struck first in the opening game. The Lady Bulldogs posted two runs in their first at-bat to take an early 2-0 lead. The Hawks answered with two runs of their own to knot the game at 2-2. The Hawks exploded for seven runs in their third at-bat to get the lead and never look back. They rolled to a 12-4 first game win. Allie Kolezynski went 4-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBI and also pitched the win on the mound. She gave up 10 hits, two earned runs, and struck out four for her 11th win of the season. Kayla Brady went 2-4 with two RBI and a triple while Leigh Ward and Alex Alex posted two hits each. 

Alora Lincoln held the Lady Bulldogs at bay in the 7-1 second game win. Lincoln threw the complete game win and gave up one run on eight hits. Amber Matthews shined in the second game. She legged out a triple and a double and accounted for three runs knocked in. Ward was perfect at the plate after going 3-3. Kolezynski added two hits and Liz Hipple went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. 

The Hawks will garner the top seed out of the North Division heading into next week's CIAA Spring Championships. The brackets will be released on Monday. The Championships will be held in Petersburg, Virginia.
