FLORENCE, SC – The Chowan University softball team wrapped up the Francis Marion University Tournament with a pair of losses on Sunday, February 5
th. The Hawks were defeated by the University of Charleston 3-0, and by Virginia State University 8-4.
Freshman
Alora Lincoln went the distance in game one against Charleston, allowing just four hits and striking out five. Charleston was able to convert on costly Chowan errors, though, as two of their three runs were unearned.
The Golden Eagles got on the board twice in the 4
th inning, and added another in the 5
th to go ahead 3-0. That lead was enough, as UC pitcher Emily Fultz threw seven shutout innings, giving up three hits and striking out 13.
Allie Kolezynski recorded two of those hits for Chowan, and
Alex Allen had the other.
A huge sixth inning in game two propelled Virginia State to their first win of the season. The Lady Trojans scored six runs in that inning off seven hits. Coming into the sixth inning, the game was tied at two. Allen and
Shelby Pendleton scored for Chowan in the third inning.
The Hawks put two more runs on the board in the seventh and final inning, but could not complete the comeback.
VSU totaled 16 hits, while Chowan managed just three. Kolezynski and
Lacey Wildeboer each had one hit and one RBI, and
Megan Bass tallied one run and one hit.
Chowan will return to action on Friday, February 10
th, when they host Mercyhurst College in a doubleheader. Game one is set for 1:00pm.
