February 4, 2012

Box Score

ETTRICK, VA – For the first 11 minutes of the second half, Chowan University scored just two points – both on free throws.  That offensive slump allowed Virginia State University to take a 16 point lead and cruise to a 66-46 victory over the Hawks on Saturday.

Virginia State (11-11, 3-7 CIAA, 2-3 North) broke open a 31-29 halftime advantage to lead 47-31 over halfway through the second half.  Chowan (8-13, 3-8, 1-4 North) never got closer than 11 after the drought.

Talaya Lynch recorded a milestone in the loss, scoring her 1,000th point.  Just a junior, Lynch nailed a three-pointer with 7:23 remaining in the game to break the 1,000 barrier.  She finished the game with a team high 12 points and seven rebounds.

Ransheda Jennings scored eight points and dished out a team high three assists for the Hawks.  Summer Curtis continued her record setting freshman season by blocking three shots, which gives her 63 for the year.

LaMesha Deal led the Lady Trojans with a double-double, notching 17 points and 15 rebounds – both game highs.  Marquilla Evans also reached double figures, scoring 10 points.

Chowan opened the game connecting on just two of their first 10 shot attempts, but then found their rhythm.  A Jennings three with 10:43 remaining in the half gave the Hawks a 16-15 lead, and marked their third consecutive basket.  VSU responded, though, by going on a 9-2 run to regain a six point lead with just over six minutes left in the opening stanza.

The Hawks drained their final three shots of the half to close the halftime deficit to just two, 31-29.  The Lady Trojans' 16-2 run, however, to open the second half, broke the game wide open and Chowan could never recover.

The Hawks cut the deficit to 11 with just under eight to play, but they could not get over the hump.

Virginia State outscored Chowan 30-18 in the paint and 16-4 off second chance points.  Chowan committed just 13 turnovers to 18 for VSU.  Virginia State held a big advantage on the glass, out-rebounding the Hawks 55-31.

Lynch became the 5th player in Chowan history to break the 1,000 point barrier, and second this season.  Teammate Ransheda Jennings broke the mark earlier in the year.

Chowan will return to action on Tuesday, February 7th, when they travel to Bowie State University for a 5:30pm tip-off.
