Box Score

ETTRICK, VA – Quinton McDuffie scored 14 second half points on Saturday.  It needed to be 16.  McDuffie misfired on a jumper with six seconds remaining in the game, and Virginia State University held on for a 60-58 victory over Chowan.

The contest was tight down the stretch, with McDuffie scoring three straight points to bring the Hawks deficit to 59-58.  After a defensive stop, Chowan held for a last-second shot and a chance to come away with the road victory.  McDuffie was forced into taking an off-balance jumper, though, and VSU secured the rebound – and the win.

Virginia State moves to 4-17 overall (3-8 CIAA, 1-5 North) with the win.  Chowan falls to 7-16 overall (1-10 CIAA, 1-4 North).

McDuffie led Chowan with 18 total points and six rebounds in the evenly played game.  Kyree Bethel notched 13 points, all in the first half, and Chris Williams tallied 11.  Kenny Mitchell led the Trojans with 27 points on 9-13 shooting.  He completed the double-double by grabbing 10 rebounds.

Chowan out-shot Virginia State 51.1% to 42.0%, and made more three pointers, but the Trojans connected on seven more free throws for the game than did Chowan.  The Hawks made just six of 13 attempts at the charity stripe, while VSU was 13-20.

Neither team held more than a four point lead until Bethel drained a three with 3:49 remaining in the first half to put Chowan up 23-18.  He made another trey a minute later, helping Chowan to a 28-26 halftime lead.

Virginia State opened the second half on a 14-4 run to pull ahead by eight with 15:22 play, and they never relinquished the lead.  They extended that lead to 10 with nine minutes to play, but Chowan responded with an 11-1 run to tie the game at 55 with 5:31 on the clock.

VSU grabbed 13 offensive rebounds, leading to 13 second chance points.  Chowan was out-rebounded 32-25 and scored six second chance points.
