MURFREESBORO – Despite out-shooting Virginia Union, the Chowan University men's basketball team fell to the Panthers 62-58 on Monday.  Chowan shot 41.5% from the floor, while VUU shot 38.7%.  Chowan also made six three pointers, to just three for the Panthers.

The difference for Virginia Union (14-11, 9-4 CIAA, 6-1 North) was offensive rebounds, as they grabbed 15 for the game, leading to 19 second chance points.  Chowan (7-20, 1-14 CIAA, 1-8 North) committed only 12 turnovers for the game, but forced just eight by VUU.

Kyree Bethel led Chowan with 19 points, including four three pointers.  He went 3-3 from the free throw line.  As a team, the Hawks connected on just eight of 15 free throw attempts.  Quinton McDuffie scored 14 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.  Mark McGlone dished out five assists to go along with nine points and six rebounds.

Calvin Brown led the Panthers with 19 points and three steals.  Juan Wilson chipped in with 16 points on a perfect shooting night.  He made all six field goal attempts and all six free throw attempts for the game.

Chowan, which led for the majority of the game, jumped out to an early 13-8 lead five minutes into the game.  An 11-2 run built that lead to 26-16 with just under eight minutes to play in the first half.  Chowan held VUU to just one field goal over a six minute span, leading to that spurt.

Three Bethel free throws gave Chowan a 12 point lead with six minutes remaining, but Virginia Union ended the half on a 10-2 run to go into halftime down just four.

Chowan maintained a close lead throughout the start of the second half, but the Panthers tied the game with a Calvin Brown three pointer at the 12:31 mark.  Chowan quickly responded, though, with a 6-0 run to keep the cushion.

Two Juan Wilson free throws with 2:12 to play gave Virginia Union their first lead since they led 6-5.  This was a lead they would not relinquish, as they made their final two shots from the floor, and final two free throws.

Chowan will play their final game of the regular season on Saturday, February 25th, when they host CIAA North foe Virginia State University.  Tip-off is set for 7:30pm.
