ELIZABETH CITY, NC – For the fifth time in the past 22 days, the Chowan University men's basketball team lost a game by five points or fewer.  On Saturday, the Hawks fell to CIAA North rival Elizabeth City 58-55.  Chowan falls to 7-19 overall (1-13 CIAA, 1-7 North) with the loss.  The Vikings improve to 12-12 overall (6-8 CIAA, 4-4 North).

In what has become a recent ritual for Chowan, the game came down to the final seconds.  After ECSU's Paul Goldsmith hit a free throw with 48 seconds remaining in the game, CU's Chris Williams sank a layup to pull Chowan within one.

The Vikings made two more free throws to give them a 58-55 lead, and set up a final shot for Chowan.  The Hawks scrambled to find a shot, but Lee Branscome had a look from three-point territory with two seconds to play.  The shot fell just short, and the Vikings secured the rebound.

Williams led Chowan with 17 points on 7-9 shooting.  He also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.  Quinton McDuffie shot 6-9 from the floor en route to 14 points.  Kyree Bethel tallied 11 points, including a trio of three pointers.

Angelo Sharpless led the Vikings with 20 points on 8-15 shooting.  Glenn Patterson drained four three pointers, leading to 14 points.  Paul Goldsmith just missed a double-double, with nine points and nine rebounds.

Chowan shot 23-50 (46.0%) from the floor as a team, and had 19 assists on those 23 field goals.  Elizabeth City shot just 38.9%, but connected on eight threes.  Chowan made only four of 15 three-point attempts.

Chowan held the lead for most of the first half, and went ahead 21-13 following a Williams free throw with 7:10 remaining in the half.  Both teams shot well from the line, as Chowan was 5-6 and ECSU went 8-9.

The Vikings put together an 8-0 run to tie the game at 21, and later took 26-23 lead with a Sharpless layup.  Chowan ended the half on a 6-2 run, though, to take a 29-28 lead into halftime.

ECSU came out of the second half gates strong, opening up a five point lead at the 13:24 mark.  Chowan quickly countered to take a 46-45 lead after two McDuffie free throws with 8:15 remaining in the game.

ECSU took a four point lead on two occasions in the final minutes before the game came down to the final possession.

Chowan had more points in the paint (30 to 16) and bench points (14 to 5) than did the Vikings, and grabbed four more rebounds.  Elizabeth City State committed only 10 turnovers for the game, and blocked four shots.

Chowan will return home on Monday, February 13th, when they host CIAA North foe Virginia Union University for a 7:30 pm tip-off.
