FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Kyree Bethel drained six three-pointers en route to a career high 22 points, but it was not enough as Chowan fell to Fayetteville State University in CIAA action Saturday, 76-67.  Chowan falls to 6-8 overall (0-2 in CIAA), while FSU improves to 3-6 (1-1 CIAA).

Bethel connected on six of his eight three point attempts, but the rest of the Hawks were just 1-10 from three-point territory.  Quinton McDuffie added 18 points on 7-10 shooting, and Mark McGlone tallied 11 points.  McGlone also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Fayetteville State raced out to a quick 7-3 lead, but Chowan fought back with a 14-4 run to take a 17-11 lead with 12:08 remaining in the first half.  Chowan held FSU to just 1-9 shooting during that stretch.

Tim Plummer drained two free throws at the 8:55 mark to pull the Broncos within two at 21-19.  But the Hawks would not relinquish the lead until 4:54 remained in the half, when Lenton Donnell made a layup to give FSU a 28-26 lead.

After a 7-0 run by FSU, McDuffie made a free throw and Bethel drained a three pointer to set the score at 33-30 with 3:04 to play in the half.  From then on, though, both teams went cold.  They missed their final eight shots combined, and neither team scored, sending the game into halftime with FSU leading 33-30.

Sheldonte Fields connected on a trey with 15:42 on the second half clock to give the Broncos their largest lead of the game at that point, 41-34.  Then, for most of the half, the teams went back-and-forth.  Chowan pulled within two, but could not get any closer.

A Tyrrel Tate layup and free throw with 4:14 to play gave FSU a nine point lead.  Chowan would not go away, though, and a 6-0 brought them back within three points, 68-65, with just over a minute and a half to play.

Mark Anthony Buright again cut the deficit to three at 70-67 with 1:01 on the clock, but Chowan would be unable to score for the remainder of the contest.  The Broncos made all three free throw attempts in the final seconds to seal the victory.

Tim Plummer led the Broncos with 18 points, including a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.  Tyrrel Tate (16) and Sheldonte Fields (12) also notched double figures for FSU.

Fayetteville State committed only eight turnovers for the game, while Chowan coughed it up just 13 times.  FSU dominated points in the paint and bench points.  In the paint, FSU out-scored Chowan 42-22, and the FSU reserves held a 39-7 advantage over Chowan's subs.

Chowan will return to action Thursday, January 12th, when they host CIAA foe Winston-Salem State University at 7:30pm.
