RICHMOND, VA – A late second half shooting slump by Chowan University led to a 67-59 defeat to Virginia Union University on Saturday.  Over the final nine minutes of the contest, Chowan made just four of 12 field goal attempts.

However, the Hawks (8-12, 3-7, 1-3 CIAA North) remained within striking distance because of their efficiency at the free throw line.  For the game, Chowan was 19-24 from the line.  They went 5-5 down the stretch to keep it close, but could not complete the comeback.

Ransheda Jennings was a big reason why Chowan shot so well from the free throw line.  She was a near-perfect 15-16 at the charity stripe, leading to a game-high 25 points.
Summer Curtis recorded just one blocked shot, but that was enough to break the Chowan single-season record.  Curtis now has blocked 60 shots on the season.

Talaya Lynch scored 12 points, giving her 990 for her career.  She drained three of the Hawks' four three-pointers on the evening, and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

After opening a quick 3-0 lead, Chowan fell behind 10-3 at the 14:56 mark of the first half.  Slow shooting by Chowan allowed Virginia Union (7-10, 4-5 CIAA, 2-0 North) to gain a 29-13 lead with 5:19 to play in the half.

Chowan's offense then went on a roll, ending the half on a 12-4 run to trail by just eight, 33-25, at halftime.  That momentum carried over into the second half, when they opened on an 11-5 run to cut the deficit to only two points with 14:52 remaining in the game.

Despite the comeback effort, the Hawks could not tie the game or take the lead.  The Lady Panthers responded to Chowan's run and took a 49-40 lead with 7:35 to play.  That lead ballooned to 13 with just under four minutes on the clock.  Chowan cut the lead to eight on three occasions as the half wound down, but could never get any closer.

Vicki Collier led Virginia Union with 17 points on 6-11 shooting.  She also brought down nine rebounds.  Danielle Ferguson (14), Melyse Brown (13), and Dashia Chandler (12) also reached double figures for the Lady Panthers.

Chowan shot 18-52 (34.6%) for the game, while VUU shot 24-53 (45.3%).  VUU made just one three-pointer, though.  The Lady Panthers held a slight rebounding advantage, 39-34.

Chowan is off until next Saturday, February 4
th, when they travel to Virginia State University.
