RICHMOND, VA – Down by 18 points with 3:15 remaining in the game, Chowan University did not give up.  Instead, they mounted a furious comeback.  Time eventually ran out on the Hawks, though, as they fell to Virginia Union 79-75 on Saturday.

In the final 3:15 of the game, Chowan (7-15, 1-9 CIAA, 1-3 North) went 3-3 from three-point territory and 4-4 at the free throw line to make the game interesting.  Threes by Kyree Bethel, Lee Branscome, and Mark Anthony Buright brought Chowan within four points with 14 seconds remaining, but the Hawks could not finish the comeback as time expired.

Bethel, the two-time reigning CIAA Rookie of the Week, shot 7-10 from beyond the arc en route to a game-high 23 points.  He also dished out three assists.  Branscome finished with eight points and Buright tallied nine.

Quinton McDuffie scored 14 points on 6-11 shooting.  Point guard Greg Alston led the Hawks with six rebounds.

The Panthers (11-10, 6-3 CIAA, 3-0 North) put four players in double figures, led by Damion Harris' 15.  Harris completed the double-double by grabbing 12 rebounds.  Juan Wilson notched 14, Cordero Holt had 13, and Wesley Simmons notched 12 for VUU.

The Panthers jumped out to an 11-5 lead just over four minutes into the game.  A McDuffie jumper at the 8:07 mark tied the game at 20, and the Hawks took a 28-27 lead with just over five minutes to play.

Virginia Union responded to Chowan's run and went up by four with 23 seconds left on the clock.  Three late free throws, though, brought Chowan within one, 39-38, heading into halftime.

Virginia Union maintained its lead in the beginning portion of the second half, and McDuffie brought the score to 61-56 with 7:42 on the clock.  At that point, though, Chowan's offense hit a snag.

Over the next 5:30, the Hawks managed just four field goal attempts, misfiring on each of them.  Virginia Union took advantage, and opened up their 18 point lead.  That lead proved to be just enough to stop the Chowan attempt at a comeback.

The Panthers out-rebounded Chowan 45-26 and had 24 second chance points.  Chowan held a huge advantage from three-point territory, knocking down 11 of 19 attempts (57.9%).  VUU connected on just two of 11 attempts (18.2%).

Chowan is off until next Saturday, February 4th, when they travel to Virginia State University.
