MURFREESBORO – Chowan shot 53.5% from the floor and 58.3% from three-point territory in a 68-59 victory over CIAA North rival Elizabeth City State University on Thursday. Chowan improves to 8-11 overall (3-6 CIAA, 1-2 North). The Lady Vikings fall to 11-8 overall (5-4 CIAA, 2-1 North).
Summer Curtis narrowly missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. She blocked two shots, which ties her for the Chowan single-season record (59).
Talaya Lynch drained six threes en route to scoring a game-high 22 points. She was a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.
Ransheda Jennings added ten points and seven assists.
The Lady Vikings came out of the gate strong, knocking down five of their first seven shots, and taking a 13-6 lead 4:25 into the game. A Lynch trey knotted the game at 13 and capped a 7-0 run by the Hawks just three minutes later.
Most of the first half was tightly contested, as neither team took more than a four point lead until the 2:23 mark, when Lynch made another three pointer to put Chowan ahead 32-27. The Hawks ended the half on a 9-3 run, taking a 37-30 lead into halftime.
ECSU's Stephanie Harper brought the Lady Vikings within five with 15:43 remaining in the game, but then they hit a cold stretch. Over the next 7:26, they scored just four points. However, Chowan's offense did not pull away, as they connected on just one field goal of their own during that period. At the 8:16 mark, the Hawks still maintained a five point lead.
A 9-0 run by the Hawks put the game away, and put Chowan ahead 67-49 with just under two minutes remaining. ECSU did not quit late, though, scoring 10 of the final 11 points.
Stephanie Harper led ECSU with 17 points and nine rebounds. DeAudra Brown (12) and Jasmine Whitehurst (10) also scored in double-figures for the Lady Vikings.
Each team grabbed 33 rebounds and scored 11 second chance points. The Hawks held an advantage at the free throw line, going 15-22. ECSU shot just 9-14 at the charity stripe.

Chowan will return to action this Saturday, January 28
th, when they travel to Virginia Union University for a 5:30pm tip-off.
