MURFREESBORO – The size of #21 Bowie State University proved too much for Chowan on Saturday, as the Bulldogs defeated the Hawks 81-71.  Bowie State out-rebounded Chowan 51-31 and out-scored Chowan 42-14 in the paint.  Bowie State improves to 13-3 overall (5-2 CIAA, 1-0 North).  Chowan falls to 6-13 overall (0-7 CIAA, 0-1 North).

CIAA Rookie of the Week Kyree Bethel drained eight three-pointers, just one shy of the Chowan single game record.  His 27 points was the most by any Hawks player this season.  He also dished out three assists and was 3-4 at the free throw line.

Quinton McDuffie tallied 19 points on 7-12 shooting and grabbed six rebounds.  Mark McGlone had another solid all-around game, leading the Hawks with seven rebounds and six assists.

Darren Clark led Bowie State with 15 points on 7-11 shooting.  Byron Westmorland, Travis Hyman, and Najee White each scored 12 for the Bulldogs.  Hyman pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

A 13-2 run midway through the first half gave Bowie State a 22-12 lead, but Chowan answered with a 10-3 run of their own to cut the deficit to three with 5:47 remaining in the half.  McDuffie drained a jumper with 3:29 on the clock to keep the scoring gap at three.  That basket, however, would be the last for Chowan over the next 9:05; a drought that extended deep into the second half.

After taking a 35-31 lead into halftime, the Bulldogs opened a 41-31 lead five minutes into the second half.  Not until the 14:24 mark, when Bethel connected on a three, did Chowan get on the board.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 15 with 10:16 to play, before Chowan cut it down to eight at 62-54.  Chowan could not maintain that momentum, though, and Bowie State slowly pulled away late in the game.

Chowan committed just 11 turnovers, to Bowie State's 18.  BSU shot 28-58 (48.3%) from the floor, but made only two of 11 three-point attempts.  A big advantage for the Bulldogs came at the free throw line, where they were 23-34.  Chowan, by comparison, was just 11-17.

Chowan will return to action on Monday, January 23rd, when they host CIAA North foe Lincoln University (PA) at 7:30pm in the Helms Center.
