Box Score

SALISBURY, NC – Chowan University could not overcome a late first half drought, as they fell to Livingstone College 65-60 on Thursday.  Chowan (6-12, 0-6 CIAA) was held without a field goal for the final 6:37 of the first half, and trailed by nine at halftime.  Livingstone (4-8, 1-5 CIAA) never allowed the Hawks to take the lead in the second half, despite Chowan tying it on one occasion and frequently closing the gap to four points.

Chris Williams led Chowan with 12 points on 5-10 shooting.  He also grabbed five rebounds.  Rickey Lamb and Kyree Bethel each tallied 11 points.  Bethel drained three three-pointers, while Lamb led Chowan with seven rebounds.

Both teams started out slow offensively, as a combined five field goals were made in the first five minutes of play.  A Quinton McDuffie layup gave Chowan a 7-6 lead at that point.  Livingstone then rattled off a 9-2 run to go up by five with 11:53 on the clock.

Chowan retook the lead, 21-18, following a Lee Branscome three and Chris Williams jumper with 6:38 to play.  The Hawks maintained that three point lead with 4:55 on the clock, but then came the scoring drought.  Livingstone scored 13 of the final 14 points in the first half, as the Hawks shot 0-9 down the stretch.  The Blue Bears went into halftime with a 33-24 lead.

Unlike the first half, the two teams came out of halftime shooting the ball well, as they made five of the first six field goal attempts.  A Bethel trey at the 16:23 mark brought Chowan within five, 40-35.  The Hawks were not done there, though, as Greg Alston tied the game at 42 with two free throws with 13:57 remaining.

Unfortunately for Chowan, that would be the last time they would tie the game.  The Blue Bears went on an 8-0 run to lead 50-42, and would later open a 54-47 lead with just 5:48 on the clock.  Over the next three minutes, the Hawks cut the deficit to five on three occasions, but could not get any closer.

Four straight Williams points with under a minute to play brought Chowan within three, but Livingstone capitalized at the free throw line to secure the victory.  The Blue Bears made all six free throw attempts with under a minute on the clock.

Mark McGlone, who entered the game ranked second in the CIAA in assists, dished out a game-high eight tonight.  Alston recorded a team high with four steals.

Nasir Austin led the Blue Bears with 17 points and 11 rebounds.  Drew Thomas added 10 points and Tyler Johnson pulled down 12 rebounds.

Chowan shot 19-54 (35.2%), while LC was 21-51 (41.2%) from the floor.  Livingstone out-rebounded Chowan 43-29.  Chowan committed just 11 turnovers and held a 21-4 advantage in points off turnovers.

Chowan will begin CIAA North play on Saturday, January 21st, when they host Bowie State University at 4:00pm.
