MURFREESBORO – Chowan University scored 16 second half points, as they fell to the visiting Saint Augustine's College Falcons, 66-52, on Monday. It was a difference of two halves, as the Hawks shot 55.6% in the first half, but only 5-24 (20.8%) in the second. Chowan falls to 6-11 (0-5 in CIAA) with the loss. SAC improves to 9-6 overall (4-1 in CIAA).
Chris Williams scored a career-high 16 points on 6-8 shooting for Chowan. He also had team-highs with seven rebounds and four blocked shots.
Three Falcon players scored in double figures, led by Tyquan Stroman with 21. Jon Kindred tallied 15 and Chris Johnson added 11. Stroman completed a double-double by grabbing 11 rebounds.
The Falcons jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead just 4:09 into the game, but Chowan responded in a big way, connecting on seven of their next eight shots, spurring a 15-1 run. With 11:08 remaining in the half, Chowan held a 17-13 advantage.
An 8-0 run gave the Hawks a 29-19 lead with just under four minutes to play, and their lead ballooned to 12 with 1:15 on the clock. The Falcons scored the final four points of the half to head into halftime trailing Chowan 36-28.
Saint Augustine's opened the second half on a 12-4 run, tying the game at 40 with 14 minutes to play. They then took their first lead since the 12:36 mark of the first half following a David Brown jumper with 10:46 remaining.
Then came the scoring drought that opened the game wide open. Chowan misfired on 10 of their next 11 shots, allowing SAC to take a 59-47 lead with just under four minutes to play. A Williams layup with 3:10 remaining halted the slump.
Chowan would make only one more field goal, though, for the rest of the game. The Falcons put the game away at the free throw line, draining their final seven attempts.
Mark Anthony Buright scored nine points, while
Kyree Bethel added seven. He managed just one three-pointer, after draining 11 over the previous two games.
Greg Alston led Chowan with three steals.
Saint Augustine's out-rebounded Chowan 44-31. They were 19-25 (76.0%) at the free throw line, while Chowan was just 10-18 (55.6%).
Chowan out-scored SAC 32-18 in the paint, and 20-15 off turnovers.
The Hawks will travel to Livingstone College on Thursday, January 19
th for a 7:30 tip-off with the Blue Bears.
