MURFREESBORO – Shaw University scored 64 points in the paint and shot 68.3% from the floor en route to a 103-89 victory over Chowan University on Saturday. The Bears, who won their eighth straight game, improve to 12-2 (4-0 CIAA) on the year. Chowan falls to 6-10 and 0-4 in the CIAA.
Shaw placed five players in double figure scoring, while four Chowan players accomplished the same feat. Chowan shot 32-56 (57.1%) from the floor for the game, including 10-20 from three-point territory. The Bears followed suit, draining five of 11 three-point attempts.
Kyree Bethel was a large part of the Hawks' three point success. The freshman had his third consecutive game of scoring 20 or more points, connecting on seven of 13 shots behind the arc, for 25 points.
Quinton McDuffie tallied 19 points on 7-10 shooting and had a team-high two blocked shots.

Mark Anthony Buright drained a jumper. Buright finished with 13 points, three rebounds, and two steals.
With 6:54 left on the first half clock, Bethel uncharacteristically missed a three pointer. Luckily for Chowan, that was the last time a Hawk would miss a shot in the first half. Unfortunately, the Bears' offense was just as potent. Spurred by an early 8-0 run, Shaw connected on nine of their final 15 shots to take a 50-45 lead into halftime. Chowan made their final eight shots of the half, leading to a 65.4% clip.
Shaw began the second half on an 11-4 spurt to go up 12 with 17:06 to play. That lead would increase to 13 following a Devon Mclendon layup with 11:45 on the clock. Mclendon totaled 13 points for the game. Back-to-back Bethel threes, though, brought the Hawks back within six (75-69) with just under ten minutes to play.
As the second half continued, the Bears continued to put the ball in the basket at a rapid pace. A 10-2 run gave them a 94-80 lead with 3:15 to play, and Chowan could not mount a comeback from then on.
Chris Williams added 12 points for the Hawks.
Mark McGlone notched team-highs with five rebounds and five assists.
Greg Alston,
Lee Branscome, and
Rickey Lamb each made a three-pointer for Chowan.
