MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University Men's Soccer Team took a tough loss today in their season home opener. The Hawks dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime play against the Knights of St. Andrews Presbyterian College.
Wilfred Amoako had the first shot of the season for the Hawks, but it was saved by the Knights' goalkeeper, Corey Francis. In the 24th minute of play,
Adam Smith scored from thirty yards back to net the first goal of the season for the Chowan Hawks.
Defense was key early on for the Hawks. The Knights' threatened with three consecutive shots on goal from Alex Smith, Ben Farwell, and Brandon Vaughan. For Chowan,
Payton Shahdad had four key slide tackles early on to defend the Hawks' goal and avert several scoring threats.
At the end of the first half, St. Andrews had 11 shots on goal, while the Hawks had 3.
In the 52nd minute of play, St. Andrews' Michael Mutebi had a breakaway and tied the game 1-1. Chowan's Kenny Moore blocked two back to back shots from St. Andrews' Scott Ashbridge and Michael Mutebi. Shortly after, Ashbridge took another shot, but Chowan's goalkeeper
Ethan Phelps made an incredible save to defend the goal. For Chowan,
Brandon Chambers had a breakaway at the end of regulation play, and took a shot from twenty yards downfield, but the shot missed just off the post.
In overtime, the Knights had 2 shots on goal, but did not score. In the second overtime, (117th minute) Michael Mutebi scored the golden goal for the Knights, to end the contest.
The Hawks fall to 0-1-0 on the year, while the Knights improve to 1-1-0. The Hawks travel to Newberry College on September 7th to take on the Wolves at 5:00 PM.
