MURFREESBORO – The two-time defending CIAA champion Chowan Hawks began their 2011 CIAA season with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Lady Trojans of Virginia State University. Chowan swept the matches, 25-22, 25-18, 25-22. The Hawks are now 5-3 on the season (1-0 in CIAA). The Lady Trojans fall to 0-7 (0-1 CIAA).

The opening set was closely contested the entire way, as neither team led by more than two points until the Hawks won the set, 25-22. Chowan had a little more comfort in the second set, as they owned a 19-9 lead following one of 14 kills on the evening by Karina Monroe. Virginia State did not go quietly, however, as they pulled within six (22-16) before Chowan eventually took the 25-18 win.

The third set was much like the first. Chowan held narrow leads most of the set, but never relinquished the lead. Along with her 14 kills, Monroe had a team-high four blocks. Callie Armistead, who is Chowan's all-time leader in assists, tallied 36 of them tonight. Tara Thomalla recorded 10 digs, while Megan Sawyer lead Chowan with four service aces.

For Virginia State, Imani Wood nailed 10 kills. Jasmine Henderson had 24 assists and Megan Whitten recorded three blocks.

Chowan returns to action this weekend, when they travel to Hampton, VA for the CIAA Round-up. Go to www.gocuhawks.com to view a complete Round-up schedule.
