Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University baseball team improved to 13-3 in CIAA play with a sweep of visiting St. Paul's College on Sunday. The Hawks now sit at 17-14 overall. Following the losses, the Tigers fall to 0-18 on the season (0-18 CIAA).
Chowan's offense was ready to go from the start, scoring five runs off three hits in the first inning. After adding another run in the second, the Hawks plated six in the third inning, opening up a 12-0 advantage at that point.
Five different players tallied RBI for the Hawks in the third inning, including
Colby Wiggins who had a two-RBI double. Wiggins would finish the game with three RBI and one run scored.
Chowan added two runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth inning to complete the 18-2 blowout.
Josh Catalano scored a team-high four runs and added an RBI.
Brett Overton,
Ryan Moore, and
William Ward each went 3-5 from the plate. Overton and Moore scored three runs apiece.
John Morris (1-0) picked up the win for the Hawks. He pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs off eight hits. He struck out eight Tigers' batters.
Game two was much closer, as St. Paul's pitching held Chowan to seven hits. All of the Hawks' scoring came in the home half of the third inning.
Colby Wiggins had a bases-clearing double and
Brett Overton knocked in a run with a single. Wiggins' three RBI was a team-best.
The Tigers responded with one run in the fourth and sixth innings to close the gap to 4-2, but could not produce any more runs for the remainder of the game.
Brett Overton had two hits in the nightcap to lead Chowan.
Ryan Bradshaw (1-3) earned his first win of the season. He went the distance and allowed two runs off seven hits, while striking out 10 batters.
The Hawks will play their third doubleheader in as many days tomorrow when they travel to Lincoln University (PA) for a matchup against the Lions. First pitch is set for 1:00pm.
