Hawks Sweep Elizabeth City State University, 5-0 and 6-4

ELIZABETH CITY, NC – The Chowan University baseball team has now won 11 consecutive games and completed a perfect 8-0 week with a pair of victories over Elizabeth City State University on Sunday. A stellar pitching performance from Anthony O'Brien led the Hawks to a 5-0 win in the opener. Josh Catalano and Brandon Mack shined on offense in game two, helping Chowan to a 6-4 victory. 
 
Chowan (25-14 overall, 21-3 CIAA) scored four runs in the top of the first inning in game one, and never looked back. They tallied three hits in the inning and were aided by two walks and two Viking errors. Neither offense could much going throughout the middle part of the game as pitching took over.
 
Justin Bagbey drove in Brandon Mack in the sixth inning to add a run and give the Hawks a 5-0 advantage, which would hold. Bagbey finished the game going 2-3 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored.
 
Brandon Mack also went 2-3 and scored a run. Colby Wiggins stole two bases and recorded one RBI. Anthony O'Brien (4-2) pitched all seven innings, allowing only two hits and one walk while striking out six Viking batters.
 
ECSU (13-21 overall, 6-14 CIAA) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two, but Chowan responded with four runs in the second. Josh Catalano had a two-RBI single and Elizabeth City State committed three errors in the inning.
 
The Vikings tied the game at four in the home half of the fifth inning. Thomas Bird scored in the sixth inning to regain the lead for Chowan. Brandon Mack drove in Colby Wiggins in the seventh to secure the victory. Mack went 3-4 in the game, with two-RBI and one run scored.
 
Josh Catalano had a team-high three RBI in a 2-4 performance at the dish. Ryan Moore (3-0) earned the win on the mound with 2.2 innings of relief. He struck out four and allowed two hits.
 
Chowan will travel to Winston-Salem State University on Thursday, April 14th for a key CIAA doubleheader with the Rams (24-16 overall, 17-5 CIAA). First pitch is set for 1:00pm.
