DURHAM, NC – The Chowan Women's Bowling team finished in 11
th place at the 2011 CIAA Championships, hosted by AMF Durham Lanes. During the day one team matches,
Sophia Mitchell knocked down 976 pins, good for a six-game average of 162.667. That average placed her in 15
th place.
Brittany Parham (138.33),
Elizabeth Jernigan (137.5), and
Abby Parker (136.333) were not far behind to pace the Hawks.
As a team, Chowan totaled 3999 pins (666.50 avg.), which placed them in 12th after day one competition. Fayetteville State University took the early lead by knocking down 5153 total pins, good for an 858.83 average. FSU's Akira Turner led the individual effort with a 199.17 average.
In the day two Baker Matches, Chowan knocked down 2784 total pins, which was ninth best for the day. That surge propelled them to jump a spot in the final standings and finish in 11th. The Hawks posted a 1-3 record in Baker Matches, defeating Johnson C. Smith University, but falling to Fayetteville State University, Winston-Salem State University, and Saint Augustine's College.
Fayetteville State University won the Championship, knocking down 8585 total pins. Bowie State University (8186) and St. Paul's College (8081) rounded out the top three.
