CHARLOTTE, NC – The Chowan Men's Basketball team will open their 2011 CIAA Tournament Wednesday night at 7:00pm when they face the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University. Chowan (5-21 overall, 4-14 CIAA) earned the #5 seed in the North Division, while Johnson C. Smith enters play as the #4 seed in the CIAA South after posting a 15-10 overall record (11-6 CIAA).
Three Hawks averaged in double figures for the 2010-2011 season. Quinton McDuffie paced Chowan with a 13.8 ppg average. Despite playing only 19 games, McDuffie led Chowan with 111 field goals made. He averaged 5.1 rebounds and totaled 21 assists on the year.
Charles Rhodes, who became the eighth player in Chowan history to break the 1,000 point barrier earlier this season, averaged 11.2 points per contest. Rhodes led the team in three pointers made (42), free throws made (50), and steals (36) this year.
Mark Brown averaged 10.9 points a game for the Hawks this season. He shot 34.6% from three point land and 77.4% from the free throw line throughout the year. He averaged 4.2 rebounds per game and dished out 45 assists.
For Johnson C. Smith, Trevin Parks averaged 21.6 points and 4.6 assists per game, both team highs. Parks shot 44.6% from the floor, 38.5% from three point territory, and 80.4% from the free throw line this season. He was named the 2010-2011 CIAA Men's Player of the Year.
These two squads met on January 6th in Murfreesboro in Chowan's CIAA season opener. JCSU earned a 71-55 victory behind Trevin Parks' 27 points. Travis Williams led the Hawks with 13 points, while Deandre Tyree followed with 11 points and 8 rebounds.
