RALEIGH – The Chowan University Baseball team recorded two shutouts against Shaw University on Saturday, improving their CIAA record to 8-2. The Hawks took game one 10-0 and followed up with an 8-0 victory in the nightcap. With the losses, Shaw falls to 9-17 overall and 3-8 in the CIAA.
In game one, Chowan (11-12 overall) scored at least one run in six of the seven total innings en route to the 10-0 shutout victory. Justin Bagbey scored one of his team-high two runs in the first inning as the Hawks took an early 2-0 lead.
Eight different players recorded an RBI in the game, led by Jordan Williams who was the only player to have two. Adam Capps went 4-5 at the plate and had one RBI. Justin Bagbey, Brandon Mack, and Colby Wiggins each drew a pair of walks for Chowan.
John DesChamps earned the victory, pitching a complete game two-hitter. He struck out 12 and walked none.
Game two was much like the opener, as Chowan relied on a consistent, balanced offensive attack, as well as an outstanding pitching performance.
The Hawks again scored in all but one inning, while holding the Bears to just two hits. Brett Garrett pitched 6.0 innings, striking out seven and allowing those two hits. Josh Barmoy pitched a scoreless seventh to close the game.
William Ward went 2-4 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in one run. Colby Wiggins went 2-3 and also scored two and drove in one. Wiggins also stole two bases in the game. Ryan Moore scored two runs and stole three bases.
Chowan will host St. Andrews College on Tuesday, March 22 in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:00pm at Hawkins Field.
