Chowan Wins Second in a Row, defeats Virginia State 63-56

MURFREESBORO – Junior Mark McGlone scored 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds to lead the Chowan University Men's Basketball team to a 63-56 victory over CIAA North foe Virginia State University on Saturday. With the win, their second straight, the Hawks improve to 3-17 overall (2-10 CIAA, 2-4 North). Virginia State falls to 3-17 overall (2-10 CIAA, 2-5 North).
 
Virginia State opened the game with a 7-2 run, but the Hawks quickly responded by scoring the next six points en route to taking an 8-7 lead at the 16:05 mark of the first half. The teams matched each other's baskets as the half progressed, with neither team gaining more than a three point advantage until the 5:08 mark. A pair of free throws by Charles Rhodes and Greg Alston put Chowan up 24-19 at that point.
 
The Hawks extended the lead to 28-21 with 1:37 remaining in the half after a Joseph Hassell layup. Neither team scored in the final 1:14, as Chowan went into intermission with a 28-22 advantage.
 
A Deandre Tyree layup 1:04 into the second half brought the Chowan lead to 32-23. Virginia State then clamped down on defense and went on a 15-6 run to tie the game at 38 with 11:46 left in the second half. Chowan responded with a run of their own, capped by a Mark Brown free throw at the 6:31 mark to put the Hawks up 48-42.
 
A D'Angelo Johnson jumper brought VSU within one with 2:37 remaining, but Chowan scored the next six points to take a 60-53 lead, which they would not relinquish. Free throws by Charles Rhodes and Mark Brown finished the game and sealed the 63-56 home win.
 
Along with McGlone's 13 points, Quinton McDuffie (12), Joseph Hassell (10), and Deandre Tyree (10) also notched double figures for the Hawks. McDuffie led Chowan with 9 rebounds. D'Angelo Johnson led the Trojans with 12 points and 6 rebounds.
 
Chowan takes the court again next Tuesday, February 8th, when they host Bowie State University. A 7:30 tip-off is scheduled at the Helms Center. VSU travels to Saint Paul's College on Monday, February 7th. Tipoff is set for 7:30pm.
