CU Softball Splits CIAA Doubleheader with Virginia State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO - The Chowan University softball team moved to 8-10 on the year after a doubleheader split with CIAA Northern Division opponent Virginia State University. Chowan, now 3-1 in the league and 1-1 in the division, won the first game 8-0 but dropped the nightcap 3-1. Errors with runners on base proved to be costly in the second game loss. The Hawks will take off until March 6th when they travel to play Mars Hill College.

Chowan pounded out 11 hits in the 8-0 first game win. Both Allie Kolezynski and Fahren Munro had three hits and two runs scored in the game. Kolezynski picked up the win on the mound after throwing 6.0 innings. She scattered five hits and struck out six batters in the shutout win. Tricia Gorman was 1-3 with a triple and three runs batted in while Mindy Byrd was 1-2 with two RBI.

After getting an early 1-0 lead, the Hawks fell behind in the third inning when the Lady Trojans scored two runs off of two hits. They added the third run in the fifth inning and went on to hold the Hawks off the base paths to take the CIAA Northern Division win. Today's loss for Chowan marks the teams first CIAA loss since first coming into the league last season.

Amber Matthews picked up the loss on the mound after throwing 4.1 innings. She gave up five hits and two runs. Kolezynski was 3-4 and Byrd was 2-3 with an RBI in the second game.

Chowan (8-10, 3-1, 1-1) will face Mars Hill College on March 6th in their next outing. That doubleheader will be played at North Davidson High School.
