ETTRICK, VA – The Chowan Men's basketball team wrapped up the 2010-2011 regular season with a 72-63 defeat to Virginia State University Saturday night. The Hawks finish the season 5-21 overall (4-14 CIAA, 4-8 North). With the victory, the Trojans finish at 6-20 overall (5-13 CIAA, 5-7 North).
A fastbreak layup by Charles Rhodes gave the Hawks a 10-6 lead at the 14:32 mark of an evenly played first half. The teams traded baskets for the next several minutes, with neither team taking more than a four point lead.
Two Justin Bess free throws tied the game at 19 with 7:46 left in the half. At the 4:05 mark, the score was once again tied, but the Trojans would go on a run to close the half. D'Angelo drained two free throws to give VSU a 34-26 advantage with just 50 seconds remaining. At the break, Virginia State held a 36-29 lead.
Chowan held the Trojans to just two points in the first 3:09 of the second half to close within three, but the run would not last. VSU went on a 12-4 run of their own over the next 4:30 to open up a 50-34 lead. The Trojans held their largest lead of the contest when they went up 57-38 at the 8:19 mark of the half.
Chowan would not go away easy, however, as three straight Quinton McDuffie points brought the Hawks back within eight with 4:41 to play. VSU responded with a 6-0 run over the next three minutes to put the game away.
Charles Rhodes led the Hawks with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Quinton McDuffie followed with 13 points, and Aaron Allen chipped in 12 points. Mark McGlone dished out a team-high five assists. Justin Bess led the Trojans with 18 points, including four three pointers.
Each squad will now head to Charlotte, NC for the CIAA Tournament. Seedings and pairings will be officially announced by the CIAA on Sunday morning.
