Chowan Softball Splits with Shippensburg

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan Softball team split a doubleheader against Shippensburg University on Sunday. The Hawks took the first game 3-2, while the Lady Raiders took the nightcap 6-2. Chowan now sits at 5-9 on the season. Shippensburg currently owns a 3-1 record.
 
The Lady Raiders opened up a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Christie Wright and the Hawks defense did not allow another run the rest of the game. Chowan began their comeback in the fifth inning, when Brenna Thomas scored on an Alex Allen sacrifice bunt. In the home half of the sixth, Megan wade drove in Brooke Owen on a single down the left field line to knot the score at 2 apiece. Liz Sill then laid down a bunt to score Lacey Wildeboer to put Chowan up 3-2.
 
Christie Wright took care of the Lady Raiders in the seventh inning to secure the come from behind win. She went the distance, giving up five hits and one earned run while striking out nine. Lacey Wildeboer went 2-3 from the plate with one run scored. Allie Kolezynski, Megan Wade, and Liz Sill each had one hit and one RBI for the Hawks.
 
Game two saw a lot of offense early. Each squad scored one run in the first inning. Shippensburg broke out in the top of the second, however, to score five runs en route to taking a 6-1 lead. All of the Lady Raider damage in the inning came with two outs.
 
Brooke Owen drove in Lacey Wildeboer in the home half of the second to close the deficit to 6-2, but Chowan could not plate another runner the remainder of the game. Emily Estep picked up the win for SU, giving up one earned run and striking out nine in 7.0 innings pitched. Christie Wright suffered the loss for Chowan. She pitched 2.0 innings and surrendered five earned runs off six hits.
 
Allie Kolezynski and Fahren Munro each had two hits for the Hawks. Courtney Steele went 2-3 from the plate and drove in three runs for Shippensburg. Chowan will host Shaw University on Saturday, February 26th for their first CIAA matchup of the season. Shippensburg travels to Salisbury, NC to take on Catawba on Friday, February 25th.
