Box Score LAWRENCEVILLE, VA – The Chowan Men's Basketball team picked the right time to be playing their best basketball of the season. The Hawks defeated Saint Paul's College 69-59 Saturday night for their fourth win in seven games. Chowan now sits at 5-20 overall (4-13 CIAA, 4-7 North). Saint Paul's falls to 8-15 overall (5-11 CIAA, 4-6 North).
Chowan came out of the gates hot, opening up an early 5-0 lead behind a
Charles Rhodes three pointer. The Tigers settled down, however, and closed the gap to 15-12 with 13:23 remaining in the half. Chowan then went on a 12-2 run over the next 4:46 to take a 27-14 advantage.
Saint Paul's once again fought back, climbing back within seven with 1:52 on the clock. A pair of layups by
Aaron Allen and
Charles Rhodes sent the Hawks into intermission with a 40-31 lead.
Saint Paul's Ibn Rassoull drained a three pointer with 12:59 left in the second half to pull the Tigers within three at 45-42. Saint Paul's then took their first lead of the game at the 8:13 mark following a Maurice Reevey jumper. Chowan would not let the Tigers regain the lead after that, however.
Two
Greg Alston free throws with 1:33 remaining put Chowan up 63-57. The Hawks made their final 10 free throws of the contest, securing the road victory.
Charles Rhodes led Chowan with a superb shooting night. He went 6-7 from the floor, including 3-4 from beyond the arc en route to a game high 23 points. He was 8-8 from the charity stripe for the game.
Quinton McDuffie (17) and
Mark Brown (11) also notched double figures for the Hawks.
Maurice Reevey led Saint Paul's with 22 points and 8 rebounds. Chowan shot 46.9% from the floor while holding the Tigers to 35.1% shooting. The Hawks held a 34-24 advantage in points in the paint for the game.
Chowan will play their final regular season game of the 2010-2011 season next Saturday, February 26th when they travel to Petersburg, VA to take on Virginia State University. Tip-off is set for 7:30pm. Saint Paul's will host Elizabeth City State University on Monday at 7:30pm.
