MURFREESBORO – Barton College grabbed 25 offensive rebounds, and 49 total rebounds, to propel them to an exhilarating 84-81 victory over Chowan University on Tuesday. Chowan brought down 27 total rebounds and was out-scored on second chance points, 25-8.
Despite the rebounding woes, Chowan held a 76-74 lead with 3:20 remaining in the game. They took that lead by way of an Antonio Reddic dunk, and it was the Hawks' first lead since the 15:27 mark of the first half. Barton tied the game at 78 when Gerald Boston drained two free throws with 2:18 remaining in the game.
The teams played to a stalemate until the Bulldogs' Evan Shelton made a foul shot with 45 seconds showing on the clock to give Barton a one point lead. Following a Chowan turnover and missed three-point attempt, the Bulldogs made four consecutive free throws with under 30 seconds to play to go up 83-78.
Kyree Bethel made his second three-pointer of the game with six seconds left to give Chowan hope, now down just two. Jarrett Jernigan made one of two free throws with less than a second on the clock for Barton, and Chowan could not get off a last second prayer.
“We got manhandled on the boards, which was the difference tonight,” said Head Coach Dan DeRose. “We lost the battle of out of bounds plays and just were not disciplined down the stretch. We committed some fouls and simply did not play a complete game.”
Chowan, now 4-5 on the season, was led by CIAA Player of the Week Antonio Reddic who drained 23 points on 10-17 shooting. He also had team highs with seven rebounds, seven assists, and seven steals.
Mark McGlone, who came into tonight shooting 64.5% from the floor, made six of seven field goal attempts, leading to 14 points.
Barton, who moves to 7-2, had four players score in double figures and was led by Gerald Boston with 18. Boston made all ten of his free throw attempts. Jarrett Jernigan (13), Joseph Velez (12), and Aaron Suggs (10) also reached double figures.
A
Greg Alston three-pointer gave Chowan an early 13-10 lead just over four minutes into the contest, but Barton would then go on an 18-7 run to open up a 28-20 lead. Chowan fought right back and closed the deficit to four (35-31) when McGlone made back to back layups.
From there, however, the Bulldogs finished the half on an 11-4 run to lead at halftime 46-35. Midway through the second half, Barton opened up its biggest lead of the game, 65-51 following a Keith Manley free throw.
Once again, the Hawks did not waiver and relied on their pressure defense to get back into the game. Over the next 3:14, Chowan would force five Bulldog turnovers and shoot 4-4 from the floor, to go on a 12-0 run and pull within two. McGlone and Reddic each drained a three-pointer, and James Davis scored four of seven points during that stretch.
“The effort in the second half was much better than the first,” added DeRose. “We did not panic and try to get it back all at once. We fought the whole way, but at the same time we were undisciplined and turned the ball over more than we should have.”
The game would go back and forth until the final minutes when Barton connected on 10 of 12 free throws to come away with the victory.
Chowan assisted on 22 of their 33 made field goals and out-scored Barton 38-30 in the paint. Barton shot 31 free throws, compared to just nine for Chowan. Chowan shot 54.1% from the floor, including draining 10 three pointers.
Chowan will travel to Lakeland, Florida on Saturday, December 17
th to take on Florida Southern College at 7:30pm.
