MURFREESBORO – Lee Branscome drained five three pointers and four Chowan players scored in double figures to lead the Hawks to their fourth win in five games with an 82-58 victory over Allen University on Saturday.  Branscome made four of his five treys in the first half and tied his career-high with 17 points.

Chowan moves to 4-4 on the season, while Allen, losers of eight straight, falls to 3-11.

Antonio Reddic had another solid game, leading Chowan with 22 points, five steals, and three blocked shots.  He also pulled down six rebounds.  Quinton McDuffie (15) and Mark McGlone (13) also reached double figure points.  McDuffie nailed five of six free throw attempts, while McGlone led Chowan with eight rebounds and missed only one shot for the game.

Both McDuffie and McGlone were a large part in why Chowan out-scored Allen 42-26 in the paint.  “When guys like Lee Branscome and James Davis knock down outside shots, it allows those guys to go to work down low,” said Head Coach Dan DeRose.  “If we continue to shoot the ball well from the perimeter, it is going to make us much more than a one-dimensional team.”

Neither team got off to a smooth start offensively, as Chowan held a narrow 4-3 lead five minutes into the contest.  Both teams made just one of their first six free throw attempts.  A 9-0 run, though, gave the Hawks an 11-3 lead with 12:53 remaining in the first half.

Allen's Richard Johnson scored seven straight points for the Yellow Jackets to bring his team within one (17-16) at the 9:38 mark.  Johnson would finish with 18 points, including four three pointers.

The game went back and forth from that point, until a quick 6-0 Chowan spurt gave them a 38-29 advantage with 2:45 to play.  The Hawks maintained that lead and entered halftime leading 43-35.

Mark McGlone's first three-pointer of the season gave Chowan a 55-43 cushion just 2:06 into the second half.  After a Jeremy Crawford jumper brought Allen back within ten at the 16:54 mark, the Yellow Jackets scored just six points in the next nine and a half minutes.  They shot 3-8 and committed three turnovers during that stretch.  For the game, Johnson recorded team-highs with 20 points and nine rebounds.

“We did a pretty good job on them defensively,” said DeRose.  “We made some adjustments in the second half, especially on Richard Johnson.  We gave them too many second chance points in the first half, but did much better in the second.”

Chowan capitalized on Allen's offensive woes and took a 69-51 lead following a Reddic layup with 8:13 remaining.  Chowan's lead ballooned to 22 when McDuffie nailed a jumper after a Greg Alston assist with two minutes to play.

Chowan out-rebounded Allen 43-30.  17 of the Hawks' rebounds were offensive.  Chowan shot 47.6% from the floor, while holding Allen to a 38.9% clip.  The Hawks had a huge day from their bench players, who scored 58 points.  Allen's bench players scored just four points.

Chowan will next host Barton College on Tuesday, December 6th at 7:30pm.  Barton defeated Chowan on November 15th at Barton, 84-71.
