Box Score BOWIE, MD - The Chowan University Football team finished their 2011 season with a thrilling 38-35 win over Bowie State University on Saturday. CU's
Ryan Murphy kicked the game winning field goal with only seven seconds left on the clock in the fourth quarter to secure the team's third win of the season. Chowan posted 315 offensive yards to help propel them to the thrilling gridiron win.
Bowie State scored first with 16 seconds left in the first quarter when Delano Johnson returned a Chowan fumble 31 yards for the score. Chowan did not wait long to recover, however.
Antjuan Randall took the ensuing kickoff 81 yards to bring the Hawks suddenly back within one. The point after attempt was blocked.
Chowan would score 21 unanswered points from there to open a 28-7 lead.
Robert Holland hauled in his 11
th touchdown of the season with just 35 seconds remaining in the second quarter to give Chowan a 12-7 advantage. The Hawks converted the two-point conversion to make the score 14-7.
Holland was not done.
After
DaKorion DeSamme returned a punt for a touchdown midway through the third quarter to give Chowan a 21-7 lead, Holland snagged an 18 yard pass from
Cameron Stover with 2:42 remaining in the period.
Early in the fourth quarter, Stover again found Holland in the end-zone; this time from three yards out. At that point, Chowan held a 35-14 advantage.
Bowie State did not seem to mind the deep deficit.
The Bulldogs scored three touchdowns in a 6:03 span to tie the game at 35 with 1:21 left in the game. They seemed to have another shot late in the quarter, after forcing a Chowan punt. BSU's Marcelus Manear, however, was flagged for a roughing the kicker penalty to give the Hawks new hope.
Chowan took advantage and took the ball down to the Bowie State 14 yard line, where Murphy nailed the 31 yard, game-winning kick.
Chowan tallied 315 yards of total offense, with 187 yards passing and 128 rushing.
Adrian Ferns paced the Hawks with 74 rushing yards.
Stover went 23-35 in pass attempts on the day and passed for three touchdowns, all to Holland. Stover connected with
Holland 16 total times, for 139 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Jason Ampy led the way with 6.5 total tackles, followed by
Anthony Session with 5.5 total tackles.
Bowie State University finishes the season with a 4-6 overall record. Chowan finishes the 2011 season with a 3-7 overall record, and 2-5 in CIAA play.
