Box Score

SHIPPENSBURG, PA (11/13/2011) – Shippensburg University used a big second half to hold off the Chowan University Hawks in women's basketball action on Sunday, 60-51.  The Raiders outscored the Hawks by 11 in the second half, and erased a two-point halftime deficit to seal the victory.

Chowan falls to 1-1 on the season, while Shippensburg improves to 2-0.

Ransheda Jennings continued her hot start to the season with a game-high 20 points on 9 of 17 shooting.  She also pulled down six rebounds and dished out two assists tonight.  Jennings tallied 16 points yesterday in Chowan's season opening win over Charleston.

Janelle Murphy recorded a career-high 15 points, including 12 in the first half.  Murphy was very efficient from the floor, shooting 5 of 6, including draining three three-pointers.

Monae Baker led the Raiders with 17 points and 12 rebounds.  Shawna Wert went 11 for 12 at the free throw line and totaled 16 points for Shippensburg.

After Shippensburg raced out to a quick 9-3 lead, the first half was a back and forth affair, with neither team gaining a lead of more than four points.  The Hawks took their first lead of the game at the 5:46 mark when Murphy nailed a jumper.  That jumper was part of six straight points from the sophomore guard.

Murphy's first half heroics would continue, as she nailed a three pointer with two seconds remaining to give Chowan a 26-24 lead heading into halftime.

For the second straight game, the Hawks offense could not find their rhythm for most of the second half.  The Hawks made just one field goal in the first 6:29 of the half.  Their defense, however, again picked up and kept the Hawks in the game.

Murphy drained one of her three treys with 8:53 on the clock to bring Chowan back within one at 37-36.  From there, though, Shippensburg began to pull away.

The Raiders went on a 10-1 over the next 4:40 to open up a ten point advantage.  They connected on 12 of their final 15 free throw attempts to secure the victory.  For the game, Shippensburg was 18 for 24 from the charity stripe.

The Hawks owned a 40-33 rebounding advantage for the game, but committed 27 turnovers.

Chowan will travel to Norfolk State University on Wednesday, November 16th.  Tip-off is set for 6:00pm.
