Hawks Offense Struggles in 31-15 loss at Lincoln (PA)

Robert Holland led Chowan with five catches and a touchdown
Box Score WEST GROVE, PA – Lincoln University (PA) held Chowan to a season-low 155 yards of total offense, and scored three touchdowns in a 2:11 span in the third quarter, as the Lions defeated the Hawks 31-15 on Saturday.  Lincoln moves to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the CIAA North with the win.  Chowan, who has dropped five straight games, fall to 1-5 overall (0-4 CIAA).

The Lions started the game with a bang, as Lance Rutledge returned the opening kickoff 73 yards to the Chowan 25 yard line.  Lincoln needed just four plays from there to find the end zone.  Gerald Swain rushed it in from the two yard line to give the Lions an early 6-0 lead.  The extra point attempt was no good.

The Hawks responded on their second drive of the game, though.  After a Lincoln penalty on their punt, Chowan started the drive on their own 45 yard line.  On the following 10 play drive, Adrian Ferns rushed the ball six times for 34 yards to help set up a Jordan Roby two yard pass to Robert Holland for a touchdown.  Ryan Murphy added the extra point to give Chowan a 7-6 advantage.  For the game, Holland hauled in a team-high five passes for 38 yards, plus the score.

The Lions did not wait long to regain the lead.  On the ensuing drive, Lincoln went 91 yards on 11 plays to take a 12-7 lead.  Lincoln was aided on the drive by a roughing the passer penalty.  With 18 seconds remaining in the first period, LU signal caller Doug Cook found Matthew Coston from 10 yards out for the score.

The second quarter was dominated by each defense.  Only 96 yards of total offense were accumulated between the two teams, and 54 of those yards came on Lincoln's final drive of the half.

Chowan drove deep into Lincoln territory midway through the second quarter, but missed a 30 yard field goal attempt.  The Hawks would not get the ball back the remainder of the half.

It was the Doug Cook show on Lincoln's opening drive of the third quarter.  The LU quarterback was 3-4 through the air for 38 yards, and rushed for 39 more.  He rushed it in from a yard out to give the Lions an 18-7 lead with 10:35 on the clock.

On Chowan's next drive, Daron Jones picked off a Jordan Roby pass attempt and returned it 51 yards for a score.

Roby's troubles did not end there.  On the first play of the following drive, Roby fumbled and gave the ball back to the Lions.

Cook took it into the end zone with a 12 yard rush at the 8:24 mark to give the Lions a sudden 31-7 advantage.

The Hawks offense got back on track, as backup quarterback Ryan Simpson led them on a short, three play drive.  Lincoln committed a costly roughing the passer on the drive, and Simpson hooked up with Antjuan Randall for a 20 yard TD pass.

Much like the second quarter, the fourth quarter saw no scoring.  The Hawks were in scoring position at the halfway point of the quarter, but could not punch it in.  Chowan had a first down on the LU five yard line, but Lincoln's defense stepped up in a big way.  Chowan would score on only two of four trips inside the red zone on the day.

Ferns led the Hawks ground attack with 49 yards on 13 carries.  Roby went 10 of 21 through the air for 75 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.  Simpson completed five of 11 passes for 60 yards and a score.  DaKorion DeSamme led the Hawks defensive effort was 7.5 tackles and one sack.

The Hawks wrap up their four-game road swing next Saturday, October 15th, when they head to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to take on Stillman College.  Kickoff with the 4-1 Tigers is set for 5:00pm Central Time (6:00 EST) at Stillman Stadium.
