Box Score RICHMOND, VA –
Karina Monroe nailed 20 kills and had four blocks as Chowan University won their 13
th consecutive match, a 3-1 decision over Virginia Union University. Monroe, the reigning CIAA Player of the Year, also had team highs with four service aces and a .432 hitting percentage.
The Hawks (17-3, 11-0 CIAA) took an early 8-3 lead in the opening game, but the Lady Panthers (4-15, 4-6 CIAA) would keep it close throughout the game. Chowan benefitted from four VUU attack errors over the final five points to capture the first game, 25-17.
Virginia Union raced out to a quick 7-1 lead in the second game, and never looked back. After bringing the deficit to 10-7, Chowan never got back within three points for the game, and Virginia Union matched Chowan with a 25-17 victory.
The Hawks turned it on from there. Three straight kills by Monroe gave Chowan a 13-7 advantage in the third game. They later opened up a 20-9 lead and cruised to a 25-16 win.
After Virginia Union jumped out to a 9-6 advantage in the fourth game, the Hawks scored the next nine points to take control of the game and match. Monroe had three more kills during the span, and
Tara Thomalla recorded back to back service aces.
Callie Armistead tallied 35 assists and nine digs for Chowan. Thomalla had a team high 17 digs, while
Tori Lewis contributed 10 kills.
Virginia Union's 25-17 win in the second game marked the first time in seven matches that a CIAA opponent won a game against the Hawks. Chowan will travel to Belmont Abbey College on October 8
th to take on Belmont Abbey and Converse College in a tri-match.
