MURFREESBORO - The CU women's basketball team picked up their first CIAA win of the season after beating Fayetteville State University 56-50 in a CIAA divisional cross over game.
Ransheda Jennings scored 21 points to help propel her team to victory while teammate
Talaya Lynch notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Today's win moves the Hawks to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the league. Fayetteville State University falls to 1-9 on the year and 0-1 in league play.
Both teams got off to a slow offensive start in the game but the Hawks were able to take a 31-20 lead into the halftime break after Jennings put up 13 first half points. Chowan's perimeter defense held the Lady Broncos to just seven made first half baskets while converting 48% (11-23) themselves in the first 20 minutes of play.
Chowan took advantage of 29 FSU turnovers and scored 25 points off those Lady Broncos miscues. The Hawks went 21-31 from the foul line in the game but were out rebounded 47 to 37 in the game. Chowan finished up the game hitting 32% from the floor and got double digit scoring from three players. Jennings 21 points led all scorers in the game while
Najah Harris put up 11 points and had four steals. Lynch's double double numbers were paired up with four assists and four steals.
For FSU, Tierra Coleman scored a team-high 15 points and had 11 rebounds while LaQuasha Jordan had 11 points. Tiffany Haywood came off the bench to score 11 points and get 12 rebounds.
Chowan (4-6, 1-1) will not play again until January 13th when they travel to Winston-Salem State for a 5:30pm tip off. Fayetteville State will travel over to Elizabeth City State University on Monday for a CIAA divisional cross over game.
